Barr on NPR

October 5th, 2008 by Jason Pye

Bob spoke with NPR’s Weekend Edition yesterday mostly about the bailout, Iraq, civil liberties and healthcare:

Bob Barr, the Libertarian Party candidate for president, first came to national attention as one of the House managers in the impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton. The former Republican congressman from Georgia tells Scott Simon he is opposed to what he calls the “bailout from hell.”

Instead, Barr says, the government should be prosecuting fraud and looking for private entities to buy up troubled institutions.

He believes the U.S. has no business being in Iraq and would bring the troops home upon assuming office. In Afghanistan, Barr proposes to use the military “much more wisely” and isn’t convinced that a massive presence of troops is required.

Everyone should be able to get health care — if they want it, Barr says. Government should be spending its time “reducing and removing the onerous regulations that actually prevent people from being able to afford health care.”

Barr doesn’t see anything wrong with government agencies exchanging information or engaging in surveillance, as long as they stay within the Fourth Amendment and federal laws. What should never be condoned, Barr says, is a president who wields absolute authority to gather intelligence.

You can download the interview here. It’s just short of six minutes in length.

Is it just me, or are a lot more people donating to the Barr campaign lately? It’s midday Sunday, and there are 29 new donors already this week. I check the counter every day, and it seems like the pace of donations has really increased. I hope it’s because people are hearing Bob’s message, seeing what the Dems and GOP are doing, and deciding that it’s time to stop supporting two-party politics.

Urbanarama and Nicholas: Yes, donations have made an incredible surge in the last 2 weeks/we are over 9700 donors and over 40 new donors today alone so far.

The momentum is really on our side/we can’t let up for a moment/there are only 4 weeks left/every single day counts now!

The bailout issue is huge/and Bob is the candidate on the right side of the issue!

I talk to everyone about the bailout and about all the pork added to it.

I reinforce that the Libertarian party is the third largest political party in this great nation.

I speak about smaller government and fewer taxes (both of which put dollars directly into the pockers of Americans to use for themselves, their families and other things of their choice), our personal freedoms (and go through examples from the bill of Rights).

I I talk about ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan (and the 79 billion dollars of taxpayor money the Iraqii governent is sitting on of taxpayot money while we send them MORE taxpayor money) and the billions of dollars wasted in running this war - not to mention the dead and wounded.

And I talk about the very serious nature of this campaign and how we have a chance that doesn’t come around that often in people’s lives - the opportunity to change the course of history - to reclaim our great nation!

  8. Bill the software guy Says:

Bob Barr is refreshingly to the point and principled. Juxtaposed to McCain who has flip-flopped on many occasions to take the big government stance. Every interview I hear Bob Barr on, he has never made a gaffe and has been to the point. I’ve been a libertarian for the last 28 years and I know many people are aware that libertarianism is for responsibility and freedom. But we keep getting the incompetent people in the oval office and in Congress (except for a handful, such as Ron Paul and Jeff Flake, who are some of the few remaining statesmen). Are the Ron Paul and Bob Barr supporters the only rational people left in the U.S.?

  9. Terry Kinder Says:

I know lately I have heard some comments on TV that the bailout vote was the last straw that made people decide to vote third party. Hopefully this will be an election year where people will vote with their feet and let the politicians know that we aren’t going to accept the bailout, the wars, government intervention in the economy, etc.

The bailout is just the first battle against the state. Although we may have lost that battle, we will win the war.

Has anyone done a quiz for BOB BARR to pass around? I am not that knowledgeable to make one on politics to do it. A friend posted this one http://barackobamatest.com/ and no she doesnt support BO.

“You DISAGREED with the Barack Obama position on 44 of the 48 test questions. This means you disagree with the Obama position 92% of the time.”

    That says a lot!

This was a very good interview! Listen to it, then post your positve comments about it at its website, as I did. You can access it, by clicking on it, at the top of this page.

National Public Radio will be interviewing alternative Presidential candidates all month! Thank them for this, and for interviewing Bob Barr, as I did too!

Concerning Presidential Polls, Barr has 71 votes or 33% and 43 or 19% of the total number cast so far. Concerning Political Parties, the Libertarian Party has 48 votes or 14% of the total number cast so far.
All three of these polls are at this http://www.strawpoll08.com/ website.

In another Presidential Poll, at this extremely important AOL website http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/10/02/aol-straw-poll-oct-3-10/ Barr has 734 votes, but only 2% of the total number cast so far!

Publicize these polls! Pass them to your friends! Let’s have some fun, and run these numbers up!!!

  13. Brian S Says:

Thanks JR for the quiz, didn’t see that you had posted it on here and I just got finished taking it and posted it too. I disagreed with him on 42 of the 48 questions which was 88% of the time. Though I think the number is greater, the answers for a lot of the questions didn’t offer the position that I had and had to choose an incomplete one that was close.

  14. Craig Says:

I can’t stand Obama but many of the questions on that Obama quiz are either incorrectly phrased or even somewhat misleading — which is exactly the type of stuff we can’t have — we need truth if we’re going to combat people like Obama . For example, the quiz talks about taxation on Subchapter S corporations. Subchapter S corporations are not taxed at the federal level on income! They are pass-thru entities! Further, the tax rate on stockholders mentioned is the tax rate on long-term capital gains — when you actually sell your shares of stock. The lack of attention to detail in these questions actually makes me question some of the information in that book on Obama. Nevertheless, there is still no legitimate reason to vote for him. Go Bob!

  15. Steve Says:

I agree with Craig. The Obama quiz was spun. I couldn’t complete it honestly, so I didn’t complete it. I did, however, leave a message saying so.

I’ll vote Libertarian again this year. Too bad it won’t matter. The election has already been bought and paid for by the Democrats and Republicans.

  17. Frances Says:

I had no intention of voting this year until Bob Barr entered the race on the Libertarian ticket. I am sick of voting to keep someone out of office because there is no candidate worthy of my support. This year is different. The only point I disagree on with Barr is going into Iraq, and I will concede that he knows things I do not. I do agree that it is time to make them fend for themselves, and that is the bigger issue.
I genuinely believe that he has changed his mind on the issues that he once supported. I support him because he stands for limited government and individual responsibility. For the first time, I have given money and time to a campaign because I support Barr on principle.
The office of President is not a popularity contest. McBama and their sidekicks do not have a right to my vote by virtue of being insiders. People are right when they say the major parties are like corporations, in the sense that they are huge money machines. The platforms of McCain and Obama are not significantly different on policy, only on matters of degree. It doesn’t matter who gets the pork in an income redistribution scheme. The damage is the same either way. They are both big government, big regulation, and scaremongering good old boys. No one has a preordained right to my vote.
Fortunately, I have met alot of Libertarians lately who are excited about Bob. Many of them are college kids, or recovering Republicans. People are getting sick of the mess our government is making of our country, and the control they have over our lives. I don’t expect Bob to win, but I hope we can get enough votes behind him to convince people that there is another choice ou there. Obama is going to win, and it will be horrific. Maybe we can get Bob to run again in 2012, and push through to the White House.
Thanks to Bob and everone working on the campaign and spreading the word. It is time to restore our government to its intended position. It is time for individual liberty and responsibility to direct our lives and our government.

Steve, it will matter, cause this year we have a shot at locking in automatic ballot access in many states, which will make all future campaigns even stronger than this one.

  19. Randy Speeg Says:

My vision of the future: This election will be historic, Bob will gain more votes than any previous Libertarian candidate by a huge margin. On election night every major network will be forced to say Bob’s name as he start’s raking in double digit numbers in key battleground states. Millions of Americans will be asking “who is this guy I’ve never heard of and why is he getting so many votes?” The matrix will begin to break as the public realizes they can no longer trust what the talking heads in their TV sets (the one’s who only ever talked about McBama) tell them anymore. Obama will be elected, his socialist plans will destroy the economy even further. His attempts to erode our Second Amendment rights will outrage us. As he takes more and more freedoms away from Americans by making additions to FISA and the Patriot Act and gives more and more of our sovereignty to NATO and the UN, people will come to realize that instead of voting for Obama just because they didn’t like McCain, they should have voted for the guy who was actually the best choice to lead us, and that was Bob Barr. People who voted for McCain will realize that McCain was a lost cause from the beginning and that McCain’s numbers plus Barr’s numbers would have beat Obama, and they should have abandoned the Republican Party and voted Libertarian. As more Americans become disgusted with the (R) and (D) government the Libertarian Party will grow larger. In 2012 Bob will run again and we will have our first Libertarian President!

I actually think that it will take an Obama presidency to finally wake America up, cause let’s face it, Bush has been the worst president that we’ve ever had. Bush has totally sliced and diced the Constitution and Bill of Rights. He has taken us into a needless war and occupied Iraq against the wishes of the American majority. And still America has not woken up. At least point, nothing short of a blatantly Marxist president will accomplish the job of waking America up. Fours years of Socialism will be like a shock and awe attack on the American voter. They will ripe for Revolution by 2012!

Craig, Steve I later found out that was the case with the test. I emailed Randy about creating a new fact-based test with responses from all 3 candidates web site issue tabs, but we decided that it was too late in the game to create one given our resources etc. But if anybody on here is capable of doing such an intense task, I’d be more than willing to assist in the info gathering.

We are getting into crunch time, we’ve got to keep the phone calls up, keep the post cards and emails flowing. In addition to the blogging, make sure that you at least put one issue on each blog post so that people will see that we are supporting Bob for issues, not just being parrots and posting Bob Barr messages with no substance like the McCain/Obama supporters do it.

The next thing is to go to this link http://www.lpgeorgia.com/opendebates.php and put your name and email address on a pre typed, professional letter that will be sent to approximately 90 individuals involved in the planning of the debates. Along with copies being sent to the McBama campaigns.

The newest idea is to flood the CPD offices with postcards demanding (in a professional way) that Bob Barr be added to the Debates. The address is:

I don’t understand how the LP can’t run commercials? I understand the expense but I’m sure there are very wealthy L(l)ibertarians in the country that could donate some real cash to the party.

I hope that Barr’s campaign along with other strong candidates will pull enough votes to automatically get the LP on may more state ballots in 2112 saving a huge amount of cash for next time. But for the life of me I don’t understand how the ‘Magic Bullet’ and the ‘NuWave Oven’ can be on TV in 30 minute segments, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week yet the LP can’t seem to run one commercial every four years.

I remember when Ed Clark was the nominee in 1980 he ran many spots at least in NC. I was only about 12 at the time but I remember his ad that started something like “to all human beings and other endangered species.”

Seems like the LP could create a DVD about the LP and sell it via infomercial to get the message out. I don’t think I ever seen a kitchen product sold on TV in anyone’s house so I don’t know how much product these people move. I’m sure as many people would by a libertarian DVD that buy the Best of The Carol Burnett show.

Hal makes a very important point/we need ads and media exposure NOW to bring Bob’s message forward at just the right time!

You need about 200 million to be serious candidate. One reason the LP must nominate their candidate in the fall prior to the general election year.

I understand the LP seems to have about as much common sense as a person voting for Obama and love to set themselves up for failure but if they take one thing from 2008 is that you must nominate a 3rd party candidate much earlier than May. Barr has been invisible to voters (save cable tv appearances) since winning the nomination.

But after I heard about Bob and watched his Tivo recording on Beck… I was hooked, came to the site, did research and been blogging about every day (too much if you ask my wife) on here, sodahead, abc, multiply.. anyplace that I can find a good debate/conversation and try to get some attention. Tomorrow, am going to the hardware store near here that has a Ron Paul sign for president in the window and talk to the owner and have a discussion about Bob, maybe I can get the sign to change.

Well, I’ve called the Commission on Presidential Infomercials twice. Once before the last farce, and once after. I can’t say it was professional, but I didn’t yell and was reasonably polite. As long as stuff like “I hope you sold your honor dear.”, “Bipartisan is not nonpartisan.”, and calling it an infomercial can be considered polite. Hey, I’m a Boiler Operator. It didn’t have any deletable expletives. That’s really pretty good.

I signed the ipetition. I tried the lpgeorgia petition, but it’s already been sent. I even chipped in a modest donation.

In that I’m laid off from a manufacturing facility that’s shutting down the plant, I can’t really do much more until the Depression That Congress Built is over.

It’s really sad to know that two morally bankrupt political parties will destroy the nation before they’ll give up their stranglehold on the election process.
