Hurricane Gustav
August 31st, 2008 by Jason PyeBob Barr, Wayne Allyn Root and the rest of us in the campaign would like to send along our thoughts and prayers to everyone caught in the path of Hurricane Gustav.
New Orleans is one of my favorite towns in the country. I visited there in 2002 for the first time and it was great. My wife and I visited again last year. The city had rebounded much more than I expected and the spirit of the town never left. It’s terrible that they are staring down another potentially devastating storm.
While many of us will spend our holiday weekend cooking out or spending time with our families, please take a moment and remember those that are caught up in the storm.

I posted this on another thread but am reposting it here as I think this thread is a more appropriate place for it.
An idea is to start a “Libertarians Helping Hurricane Victims” non-profit organization. Donations could go to something “libertarian” like helping to re-open a privately funded homeless or women’s shelter.
An effort like that would generate a little publicity for sure, but more importantly, would show the rest of the country that libertarians walk the walk and offer up an alternative to government aid

As much as I sympathize with the residents of New Orleans, they need to take action while they still have plenty of time and evacuate. They should also understand that it is not the federal government’s obligation to help them out: It is up to the state government and the people themselves!
Meanwhile, Bob Barr should bring this story into attention:

Looks like the FBI wants to spy on us without warrants, again!

We are the “people themselves.”

If I may, I’ve created a rather new website called Personal Hurricane Center.com I’ve recently added forecast tracks, computer forecast models, surface observations, radar and satellite imagery, and more. I believe this info will come in quite handy for this in the path of Gustav and Hanna (don’t foget Ike coming off the African coast!).

Don’t forget Hurricane McCain and Hurricane Obama.
Donations are currently being received for Libertarian relief.

It’s really good to see the campaign recognizing the crisis presented by the hurricane. I like the idea as James R. suggested for doing something for the hurricane victims as Libertarians.
I did donate to the Red Cross disaster fund today in Bob’s name, identifying him as the Libertarian candidate for President.
If there is not time to organize something because of the short time frame until the hurricane Gustav comes ashore., we might consider making donations to private disaster relief organizations in Bob’s name.
And with at least Hannah and Ike in the offing, perhaps someone can follow-up on James r’s thinking about something tangible we might do we might do to help our fellow Americans.
I’m sure there will be plenty of needs after the storms hit.

Here’s an idea…
Follow suit with Senator Obama and visit LA in the wake of the storm to help with relief efforts. Seeing Barr and Root on the ground helping individuals in need would make me that much more proud to be a supporter of this campaign. Of course, Obama’s relief efforts are probably more for publicity than they are for aid, but that lowers the bar for what Barr and Root would be expected to do as hurricane relief volunteers.

Off-Topic: How did the Republicrats ever manage to pass a law that prohibits private donation to a campaign fund of more than 2,300? How can it be constitutional to tell Americans they can’t give as much money as they want to whoever they want? This law was clearly passed to prevent alternative candidates from raising money from wealthy donors.

I spent most of my afternoon cranking up my trusty Honda generator that was last used by some friends in Gulfport….20 years old and still kicking. Looks like all we will get is 50-60 mph gusts and some tornados. While happy with this, my prayers go out to those to the west.
Since my internet service is going on and off, in the next few days it would be good for someone to examine the data from the Zogby poll that I think I saw. In 8 of his 9 purple states, Barr is the “swing” vote, In numerous other states, Barr’s vote could swing the difference to the other candidate.
In most polls you see in the national media, you see McCane with X amount and Obammer with X and 10-12% to “other” or unsure. We know that is incorrect, check Nevada. We also know that the media is basically a lazy lot and they must be spoonfeed in order to come up with an idea that wasn’t theirs to make it theirs.
I think this would be most helpful in getting Barr’s name out right now as he is a major factor in this election right now. This might be an opportunity to slip into the debate, I dunno. Maybe somebody on the staff or supporter could get the information on the Zogby site and get it out to the media. Those morons probably don’t even know it.

I need to clarify my last post….go state by state in Zogby in the undecided and make a chart on those purple states and show how Barr is affecting the toss-up states
Then go thru the remainder of states and pick out the ones that if Barr didn’t exist, what might be for the guy behind. Do the same as above.
I think it’s a bit sobering for those who have not considered Barr’s impact on the race. It also makes the “5%” insignificant in a way.
I know that the Zogby poll has been the most accurate polling data in the last elections. No better poll to footnote than the best……..

both parties control the politics of this nation w/the media also putting their two cents worth and not giving any credence to third parties and independents who may have a better solution to america’s current problems x it appears that obama may have committed a blunder in not choosing clinton for his vp ( the supposed dream team) which would make the democrats hard to beat -what with the problems caused by the current admin x now this is followed by mccain who chooses an unknown x both parties have now created problems for themselves x this now gives an opening for the third party/ independents which should not be taken lightly x how about coming together ( barr/ nader and paul ) and some members in congress that share the same vision as the independents to correct the situation and make this election not between two parties ( they are both the major cause of this country’s problems) and a sort of merged stand and real down to earth solutions that would really benefit the american middle class which will be the deciding factor in this all important election that has a lot of supposed firsts x this is a chance that is now thrust on the third party/ independents and united as a team will mean how the voters will have real choice for those that say none of the above but divided will give back the edge to the two parties

5% is only because Bob (and the others) are never mentioned during the Presidential Race segments of the native news of local broadcasts, and also during the same segments in cable news rotation. If the media mentioned the alternative candidates more, or even 100% of the time, we’d quickly gather strength. As it stands recently we’ve seen McCain adopting libertarian-like lip service while talking about McCain-Feingold as a success. He’s blinded by his personal investment in it reflecting well on him, and is not capable of viewing it objectively. Worse; he may be a knowing participant in bringing about the “unanticipated” effects of campaign finance laws that don’t make sense.

Libertarian-like-lip-service? McCain isn’t the only one! While I was watching Obama’s acceptance speech I lost count of how many times he made comments that were almost direct quotes from Libertarian ideas to cover up the true nature of his socialists projects.
You can read Obama’s speech here:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/28/us/politics/28text-obama.html
If anyone feels like going through and counting the Libertarian-like quotes.
It’s clear that the Bob Barr campaign is having an effect on the way McCain and Obama are conducting themselves. Obama even decided to visit Ohio this weekend, probably to soak up any local news coverage of Bob Barr’s visit to Ohio.

Some Ron Paul supporters has already registered a domain libertyaid for online donations. This just proves how libertarians can take personal social responsibility and action and lead in this way.

Those who say it is not up to the federal government, it is up to the state government to aid hurricane victims don’t get it. It is not up to ANY government. No government has the right to take money from me by force (taxes) to give to anyone else. It is my money to do with what I want, which could include giving money to aid hurricane victimes OR NOT, as I choose.

Well my power’s about to go out anytime here in lafayette louisiana, hope everyone else is safe. Winds already at 20 -25 mph and the centers still about a hundred miles away. Hope everyone else here is safe.

Please stay safe, David.
September 1st, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Stay safe there in LA.
I’m wondering why the leadership has never thought to have the Dutch consult on the levee/dike system of NO. Are they too good to ask someone who has dealt with this forever and know what they’re doing?
September 1st, 2008 at 7:21 pm
Face it folks, southern LA is sinking into the Gulf and NOLA is currently on track to being an island 50 miles out in the not to distant future. NOLA and other low lying communities should be relocated to higher ground, and not at taxpayer expense. Let the free market and the corruption that is all things NOLA pay for it. Why keep pissing into the wind?
Speeg you’re a sharp kinda VP union guy, maybe you could enlighten us as to how the influence of corrupt unions and political parties are playing in this process of “we gotta use billions of tax payers dollars to keep the 9th ward dry” arguments.

Hmmm, the book of Matthew sheds some light;
7:24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
7:25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
7:26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
7:27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
September 1st, 2008 at 11:22 pm
My interpretation of Matthew’s quote is he was talking about faith not construction techiques in the 9th ward……but I do understand your drift

New Orleans isn’t the only unsafe place on our coast, in New York City the lower Manhattan is 7.4 feet above sea level making a hit there makes Katrina look like chump change:
“Surge levels for hurricanes of Categories 1-4 have been calculated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the 1995 Metro New York Hurricane Transportation Study using NOAA’s SLOSH model. A Category 3 hurricane on a worst-case track could create a surge of up to 25 feet at JFK Airport, 21 feet at the Lincoln Tunnel entrance, 24 feet at the Battery, and 16 feet at La Guardia Airport. These figures do not include the effects of tides nor the additional heights of waves on top of the surge. Surge levels for a Category 4 hurricane would be even higher, reaching 31 feet at JFK Airport and Lincoln Tunnel, 29 feet at the Battery, and 21 feet at La Guardia. Although a Category 4 hurricane at the latitude of New York City is extremely improbable at present due to the relatively cold water offshore, some studies suggest that hurricane strengths will intensify as oceans become warmer. Therefore, in the future, a Category 4 hurricane, while still remaining a very rare event, might potentially survive into these latitudes.”
New York was hit by a Cat 3 in 1821. The storm surge of a nearby Cat 3 would be just as damaging.
