China sounds much like the US on privacy
August 6th, 2008 by Jason PyeYou may have heard in the news recently about some of the eavesdropping methods that will be employed by the Chinese government during the Olympic games. The State Department has issued a privacy warning to American citizens attending the games.
Bob points out that due to laws like the USA PATRIOT Act and NSA wiretapping programs that China “sounds an awful lot like America,” adding that while the United States isn’t a communist nation, “our government has acquired from Congress-and sometimes simply seized on its own-the power to electronically surveil citizens’ phone calls and e-mails.”

So…we have the Olympics in the news and Bob makes a good segway from the Olympics to privacy concerns he has within our own country. Thousands of Americans will be returning from China in a couple of weeks. Maybe we should be looking for some story about an American’s computer or privacy being compromised at the Olympics, or something similar in nature, and being ready to pounce on it.
Although I think it’s an unfair “slippery slope” comparison, Bob knows that can be effective. It has worked for him before in a previous life in DC. It could work again. You want to be effective or you want to be fair?
