Barr campaigns in Texas
July 21st, 2008 by Jason PyeThe Houston Chronicle covered Bob’s campaign stop in Texas over the weekend:
Libertarian presidential candidate Bob Barr, whose campaign manager once guided Ross Perot’s reach for the White House, sported leather boots Sunday as he sought votes in Houston.
[...]
Barr, the Georgian who served as a Republican with Libertarian Party inspiration Ron Paul in Congress, said his third-party appeal stems from the idea that “choosing between the party of big government and the party of really big government … is not serving the country well.”With either major party in control, Barr asserted in an interview before a speaking engagement Sunday night, “nothing is going to change of any substance.”
Bob is in New Hampshire tomorrow and back in Texas on Wednesday and Thursday. Check the events page for more information.

It’s a good sign that Bob Barr is getting in the newspapers of every city that he visits. I also make sure to check the overall number of articles on Google News to get an idea of how much press a person is getting, and doing a search for Bob Barr has gone from around 1,600 articles from a month or so back to 1,800 a week ago and almost 2,000 now.

Mr. Barr, thank you for making a campaign stop in Houston Sunday night. YOu gave a very impressive speech and answered questions directly and, may I say, correctly. You certainly won over the crowd.
You have come a long way from your Republican roots and I hope you will share the secret of how we can spread libertarian ideas to sitting Congressmen as well as those who may have retired from office.
Perhaps sending Bob Smither out as our ambassador is the secret?

Dear friend,
I urgently need your help.
I’m in Charleston, West Virginia attempting to get Bob Barr on the ballot. When I arrived early Wednesday morning, I didn’t think it would be possible, but I had to give it a shot.
We’re headed toward 48 state ballot access. Only West Virginia and Oklahoma are problems. However, there is hope in Oklahoma as we have just filed a lawsuit to get Bob Barr and Wayne Root on the ballot there.
If we win that case, only West Virginia will stand in our way of 50 state ballot access - an apex of achievement for a third-party candidate and something the media cannot ignore.
But here’s my problem.
There is no active Libertarian Party in West Virginia and a very limited pool of volunteers.
I have had to bring in out-of-state petitioners from across the nation to get this drive done.
So far I have 13 petitioners on the ground and another nine on their way.
I didn’t think we would have the manpower to get the drive done, but now I think it’s a possibility. I have enough petitioners in the state and on their way to collect enough signatures by our August 1st deadline.
But I won’t have the money to finish the drive if I don’t raise $43,000 by close of business on Monday.
Russ Verney, our campaign manager, wrote to me this morning and instructed me to shut down the drive if I cannot raise the funds by COB Monday.
So far this month, we’re raised less than $100,000. We’re even off pace from our June fundraising totals.
The campaign cannot afford this ballot drive as I write this. We would have to choose between basic campaign operations or the possibility of 50 state ballot access.
Russ has to make a tough call on this drive but he did give me 96 hours to raise the funds to continue the effort.
I ask that you keep this drive alive by helping me raise $43,000 by close of business on Monday.
Please make an emergency donation to fund the West Virginia ballot access drive right now. Please give generously by clicking here.
My friend, I’ve only been in this state for a few days and we need to be on the ballot here.
When I arrived in West Virginia it was 2:30 in the morning. I pulled into a hotel parking lot and a restaurant owner and one of her patrons were standing outside smoking a cigarette.
They didn’t look too happy.
As it turns out, just a few weeks earlier the county had banned smoking in all “enclosed workplaces” including bars and restaurants.
I’m not a smoker, but it’s the property owner’s decision to allow or disallow smoking on their premises - it is not a county bureaucrats’ decision.
When I explained libertarian philosophy to them and told them about our candidate Bob Barr, their eyes lit up.
They did not know that there is an alternative to the two-party system. They didn’t know that there is a party that respects an individual’s rights and personal decisions.
Since then, I’ve talked to many more folks in this state and the same holds true. We need to give West Virginians a better choice and the only way to do that is to get Bob Barr on the ballot.
Please donate today and help me keep this drive alive. I have two weeks left to pull it off and I sincerely need your support.
A gift of $50, $100, $250 or more would be a significant help. If you can’t give $50, give $5 or $10. Every dollar gets us one step closer to getting a pro-liberty candidate on the ballot in what could be our final ballot access hurdle.
Thank you for all that you do.
In Liberty,
Shane Cory

In addition to the link you left at http://www.BarrPaul08.com they have the same petitoin at barrroot. I was wondering if Barr has said anything about a Barr Paul ticket as a possibility>?

Its exciting news to see the buzz that Barr is generating. It even sounds like he’ll be on the ballot in all 50 states, which is a major turning point for American politics. This could be the first truly three way presidential race in 100 years.
July 21st, 2008 at 6:08 pm
Hey Matt,
if it becomes a three-way race, watch out! Barr could really make history and bring a 3rd party sailing into the White House once people realize the farce that is McBama.
it is getting interesting. Noticed we went up a few thousand more today so hopefully we’re closing in on the 14,400 goal needed to round out WV.

The media is reporting today that on August 16, Obama and McCain will share the stage for the first time this election season at the Saddleback Civil Forum on Compassion and Leadership in Lake Forest, California. The event is being held at Saddleback Church and moderated by Pastor Rick Warren, author of A Purpose Drive Life. It is also be co-organized by Faith in Public Life. I am sending emails to the following addresses to encourage them to invite Ralph Nader and Bob Barr to participate in this forum as well.

Pro-Democracy,
thanks for the heads up. I sent an email to the 2 primary organizations. I also encouraged them to open it wide to candidates like Nader, etc. to show that I am truly seeking a plurality of debate (which Barr will win, I have no doubts!)
wanted to add a suggestion regarding emails too: Just remember when sending advocacy emails to be respectful in your words when referring to the status quo/2 party monopoly. It is okay to point out the monopoly on the discussion that the two parties have had, but just be sure to word it in a polite manner. Remember that in a way you are representing Bob Barr and making an impression on someone possibly not familiar with him.

I hope they don’t give up on the WV ballot access drive. We are so close, I think we can make it happen. I have donated twice since the fundraising letter went out the other day.

Matt,
Since the first note went out with the 14,400 request, there’s already over 1/3 of that figure raised and counting…just in today’s contributions. looks promising

Pro Democracy,
Great work! I’m going to email the forum as well. In addition, I sent emails to Jack Cafferty and Lou Dobbs, at CNN, asking them to discuss Bob Barr, and I also sent an email to the conservative website “Worldnetdaily” asking Joseph Farah to address his campaign. We need Barr in these upcoming presidential debates!

Dear friend,
Please excuse the rushed tone of this message but the situation is heating up in West Virginia.
When I wrote to you on Friday, I had until the close of business on Monday to raise $43,000.
I have good news and bad news.
The bad news is that we fell about $3,000 short of our goal.
The good news is that over 662 supporters donated to our effort and we were able to raise $40,030! Thank you!
Our campaign manager, Russ Verney, is a hard-nosed guy but he recognizes that the support is there and, while it’s a long shot, we still have a chance to make it on the ballot in West Virginia.
Russ has given me the green light to continue the drive. We’re going to go for it and I’ll need your help more than ever.
I’ve been on the ground in WV for less than a week and have been able to get 18 petitioners hired, trained and working.
That’s not enough, I need 30 more people by the end of the week.
I had been assured by the state employment agency that they would help hire local petitioners to fill the gap. That fell apart yesterday when they informed me that there was not much that they could do because of internal policies.
You’ve gotta love bureaucracy . . .
In order to make up the shortfall in manpower, I’m going to need to fly in more people immediately.
I’m going to make a big request that I need you to seriously consider. This is an “either/or” so please read and consider both options:
EITHER . . .
Visit the “Wild and Wonderful” state of West Virginia!
If you’re willing to petition in West Virginia and can take time out of our schedule until August 1st. I need you here by Friday.
It’s beautiful country, with nice people, and you’ll be supporting a great cause.
If you can take the time to come to West Virginia for the duration (August 1) and are comfortable asking strangers to sign a piece of paper, please contact me immediately by calling 877-465-6080.
OR YOU CAN . . .
Sponsor a petitioner to travel to West Virginia!
If you cannot take the time out yourself, I completely understand, but you can still help in a very big way by sponsoring someone who can make this short-notice trip.
Each supporter that can petition for Barr/Root is going to cost at least $250 to travel plus about $50 a night at a not-so-luxurious hotel. Please make a donation and cover what you can.
A $50, $250 or even a contribution of $25 will help us cover these added expenses. Click here to donate.
Please give us a hand with this effort as there are only nine days left to get the job done.
THANK YOU for your continued support. We could not do this without you.
Very Respectfully,
Shane Cory
Deputy Campaign Manager
Bob Barr 2008
P.S. Please consider the two options above as soon as you can. To donate, click here.

Why mess with Texas when the LP dream ticket (Ron Paul and Gary Johnson) will be appearing together at the Rally for the Republic in Minneapolis? I know I’ll get “thumbs down” for this post but truth speakers usually do.

James Ron Paul is running with the GOP party and has stated that he will not get out of the party.
July 23rd, 2008 at 5:43 pm
I understand that, Eric. He did, however, run as an LP candidate in 1988. Still, I believe that if you ask most people that have been libertarians for longer than 2 years, that Dr. Paul and Gary Johnson would be the LP dream ticket.
