Good polling numbers

July 9th, 2008 by Jason Pye

There is more polling data to talk about. First, I’d like to point to a new poll out of North Carolina from Public Policy Polling showing Bob Barr at 8%. The crosstabs are available here.

Zogby also has an interactive 50 state map showing polling data from several states. It gives an idea of where our strengths are. Keep in mind that the margin of error varies from state to state depending on the number of participants and not every state was polled.

Here are some of the notable states:

New Hampshire - 10%
Oklahoma - 9%
New Mexico - 9%
Nevada - 9%
Georgia - 8%
Colorado - 8%
Minnesota - 8%
Iowa - 8%
Arizona - 7%
Ohio - 7%
Indiana - 7%
Tennessee - 7%
Texas - 6%
Florida - 6%
Missouri - 6%
Oregon - 6%
Michigan - 6%
Maryland - 6%
South Carolina - 6%
Virginia - 5%
Illinois - 5%
Washington - 5%
California - 5%
Connecticut - 5%
Massachusetts - 5%
Pennsylvania - 5%

These numbers are encouraging, but we believe we can do better. Right now the goal is to hit 10% nationally to get in the Google/YouTube presidential debate on September 18th in New Orleans.

Keep up the good work, my friends.

What a shame! I live in Oklahoma where Barr is polling at 9% and we can’t even get on the ballot. This speaks volumes as to how far behind Oklahoma still is.

I wonder why Minnesota and Iowa are so high? They are not what you normally would predict as “libertarian friendly” states.

And dissapointing that California is only at 5%.

We need to do something about that. Californians start campaigning hard for Barr/Root!!

I wish Barr would visit Florida a battleground state or at least send Mr. Root. There is a lot of money down here for fundraising.

We really need hiw up here in the state of Michigan, this state is desperate for a fresh new idea in Government after our Governor has run the state into the ground and the mayor of Detroit is embarassing the hell out of the city. time to get the Democrats out of Michigan.

Being the kind of person I am I have great faith in people. The more people we talk to about the LP the better. I (without getting on a soapbox) tell at least 3-5 people a day about lp.org. Thats all I say, no preaching, no soapbox, just a simple “look here and see whats really up with us”.
The more of a fire we have under our butts, the more it will hopefully rub off on others.
    We can do this people!!!

What’s the status on NH? I understand George Phillies will be on the ballot as the Libertarian? What is the status of getting Bob on the ballot, as another Libertarian or as an Independent?

Bob Barr is polling high in my state (New Mexico) with no exposure. It’s weird, the only signs and bumper stickers that I see here are for Obama and Ron Paul. I know I haven’t seen a Barr sticker (I still have a Paul sticker on my car) and I don’t think I’ve seen a McCain sticker. I’ll call my drive time talk radio buddy and ask him to get Bob on his libertarian-leaning show.

Everyone needs to get out on the street corners with signs. We MUST get more name recognition for Bob Barr!!!

Good polling numbers thus far. If Barr is polling in at 9% in Oklahoma I see no reason why we should not be able to get him on the ballot. I find these numbers amazing considering the lack of air time and fund that Bob has.

A little note for fundraising. I think you may want to set another monetary goal like finishing off the rest of the first half million in the next 7 days. Goals always help with money collection as long as they are reasonable. Clearly you will need the money to get to the 10%.

Looking strong in the Southwest. There is a lot of potential there considering your positions. You should also be doing better on the West coast. CA, WA, OR, NV, CO and NM all have medical marijuana laws, which means you can get a lot of bang for your buck with adds there emphasizing legalization on the federal level. The CA court ruling against homeschoolers could have many people looking favorably towards towards you if Root holds some rallies there. His stance on internet gambling will also help in Silicon Valley and NV. TX is booming, because of NFTA. How about a rally in Laredo to celebrate it? Barr, looks like TN, GA, FL and SC still think fondly on you. The drug war hit Atlanta hard, and TN leads the US in marijuana production. A tour from Atlanta to Nashville could get a positive reception. If you swing north to Louisville, KY you could talk about how globalization is turning that town into a city. FYI, keep tabs on the press releases going out in New Jersey. A badly worded statement about immigration could cost you heavily in the Boston-Washington corridor.

I heard a few weeks back that a merchandise area of the site was coming soon. Anyone heard any progress on this? I’d like to get it from the campaign, but with the delays I might have to resort to Cafe Press or something.

Woot! Bob has the highest poll numbers in NH! And that is with zero literature or signs (btw, people keep asking for them). I think if the campaign puts some real resources up here that number will stay or could even go up.

To answer Alex’s question: Phillies still needs to finish petitioning to get on the ballot. There is a team on the ground now in NH collecting petitions for Barr and we’ll be done by the end of the month.

So, Mr Barr, since you are polling so well here can we get an early commitment from you to come to the LPNH convention on October 25?

Just a note for those looking for signs, bumper stickers, and shirts, you can go to this site and order them. It is the Libertarian Party store.

If you look at the map, it’s interesting to see that in New Mexico, “Barr beats McCain among Independents.” Barr must have pretty good name rec.

    New Hampshire is the Vanguard!

Want the most votes? Wait until McCain picks his running mate. If he does not choose Romney go for the Mormon vote. If he does choose Romney go for the Evangelical vote. Barr become a Methodist. Do not talk about being born again and appeal to both groups. Religion will matter this year.

  17. Larry Says:

Oh and when going for the Mormon vote in the west all you have to say is this: I did not agree with Romney on all the issues but I can not believe people would not vote for such a fine man based on religion. That is all you have to say.

  18. Larry Says:

Hey Barr sorry to hog the blog but you could actually win in Nevada if Romney is not picked. Get the Libertine vote and the Mormon vote. There are tons of Mormons in Nevada.

Ya know, we could probably get a lot higher than 10% and get Bob into the debates if we HAD SOME CAMPAIGN MATERIAL!! Hello HQ, are you listening. I’ve got volunteers here in Louisiana all ready to hit the streets. I’ve got people asking for yard signs and bumper stickers. Where’s the campaign store? Why can’t you at least put up official graphics for us to download and take to local printers? I understand things take time, but time is not something you have. It’s been 6 1/2 weeks since Barr won the nomination, 45 days. I’ve LP members here telling me they repeatedly are trying to contact the campaign to set up radio interviews here in Louisiana, and they get no response. Is no one manning the e-mail boxes? What’s going on here folks? People have some patience, but it is wearing thin and they will soon give up. You have to strike while the fire is hot, else it’ll just fizzle.

The NC poll shows Barr with 12% among independents, and doing better among Democrats than Republicans - so much for the idea that he only appeals to conservatives. His strongest support is among both 20-somethings and seniors, and he outpolls McCain among African-Americans. This poll shatters a number of misconceptions and shows that all kinds of people are hungry for a principled and sensible voice for liberty.

What fantastic numbers! We’ve got a definite foothold in NH, and its looking like we’re about to set stakes in NV, OK, and NM.

Mark this on your calendars, people. THIS day, July 10th, 2008, was the day we saw our campaign officially “get legs.”

Keep up the great work, everybody! Get signs, convince your friends and family, and don’t forget to call in those talk shows!
