Barr officially on the ballot in Georgia

June 27th, 2008 by Jason Pye

Bob officially put himself on the ballot in his home state of Georgia yesterday when he appeared at the office of the Secretary of State with other Libertarian Party nominees for statewide office to file his paperwork:

Former GOP congressman Bob Barr formally filed his paperwork Thursday to appear on the state ballot as the Libertarian Party candidate for president, complicating the fall elections in what has been a reliably Republican state.

Barr, who built much of his congressional career from 1995-2003 on dogging President Clinton and supporting civil liberties, is trying to build off a base of disaffected conservatives and former supporters of U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, whose bid for the Republican nomination fell well short.

Barr said Thursday that Georgia is one of 49 states where he plans to have his name on the ballot, giving himself only an “outside shot at Oklahoma.”
[...]
Some political observers say Barr’s candidacy could put Georgia and other typically Republican states in play for U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., and help cost U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., the election.

Barr brushed off that suggestion.

“Anybody that is already predicating a reason for John McCain to be losing and looking for an excuse probably does not have a real good feel for the election,” he said. “Or maybe they do; maybe they already anticipate losing. But it’s just way too early to be drawing conclusions like that.”

Insider Advantage and the Atlanta Journal Constitution were also on hand.

I’ll get some pictures up a little later.

This is my fourth time trying to contact your campaign. I contacted a local Yahoo group in Baltimore, then Shane Cory through Meetup.com, Finally I signed up at your website trying to ‘get involved’. I have yet to receive any responses so far.

I would very much like to help your campaign get Bob Barr elected. I have very limited methods at my disposal, given I am traveling around the United States at this time and cannot conform to a tight schedule (i.e. I cannot say I would be in town to do ‘meet-ups’).

I would need your help to make that happen (single-promotion is harder than mutual promotion), I’ve ideas how I can help, and would love to talk about more, but long emails aren’t read.

    Please email me back.

The L.P. simply HAS to replace the V.P. offering they foisted off on Bob Barr!

Mr. Root might appeal to LP members who are familiar with him. But just having good ideas about issues and a good record within the party won’t get it done. Surely, as an odds-maker, he can see his candidacy is a detraction and not an asset.

The party accepted Bob Barr after a short period of service in the party. The leadership obviously realized that he is a man of national stature. But instead of letting him name his own running mate, who certainly would also have been a person of national renown, the convention worked their own loyal candidate onto the ticket. This provincialism could be all it takes to prevent a Barr presidency from coming about.

It’s time to show some class and let the nominee choose his own running mate. If the party can’t bring itself to do that, they can’t have much confidence in their nominee. And that will be a standout flaw in the months ahead.

    Grab the brass ring!

Don’t muddy up the waters with short-sighted egocentric choices.

Get 20% of the vote in Georgia and it will send a message to everyone. Quit saying your trying to win and show the media and the American people what your made of and go for realistic goals.

You have my full support and vote.

McCain supporters should be out there supporting McCain, not working against Bob. if Mccain has the right ideas, people will vote for him. If he’s out of touch, they won’t.

There is a groundswell developing in this nation against the business as usual politics in Washington. The defeat of the Clintons was only a first step.

Now people need to know there is a real alternative in Bob Barr. The most frequent comment I get when I talk about Bob’s position on an issue is: that makes a lot of sense.

We need to get the message out on his positions and raise enough money to let him actually compete.

I agree the issues sections has to be better developed so people can come here and see his positions on key issues.

I already find people asking me lots of questions on Bob’s positions - I want to better educate myself so that I can speak on more issues and I want to send them to this website to glean more information and to become involved in the campaign including donating.

    About Oklahoma–

I live in South Carolina but attend college in Shawnee, OK. If there’s any way that I can help with the efforts there please let me know! I have signed up to volunteer on the website but have not received a reply (I do realize that the campaign is likely understaffed at this point and not exactly working on full power, so no worries there). Any way I can help, in SC during the summer or in OK while I’m at school, just let me know!

    Ken,

    Responding to this:

Actually, given the LP’s severely broken Bylaws in the area of VP selection, we’re lucky to have a candidate as good as Mr. Root. Of course, having been at the National Convention, I would have categorized Mary Ruwart as you note “own loyal candidate”. Mr. Root was considered to be a relative newcomer similar to Mr. Barr.
