Presidents are not above the law, says Barr

June 7th, 2008 by Shana Kluck

At State & National Election News, Bob Barr repudiates the claim that Presidents are not subject to following the same laws all citizens of the United States are expected to obey.

Doug Holtz-Eakin, Sen. McCain’s chief policy adviser, recently contended that the Constitution gives the president unilateral authority to spy on Americans without congressional authority. “Along with President George W. Bush, Sen. McCain seems to believe that the president, like the British king of old, possesses unconstrained and unreviewable power,” warns Barr. “This is a truly shocking claim: when the American colonists created a new nation, they were determined to limit both government and executive power.”

“The next president must reverse the aggrandizement of power to the executive branch and defend the privacy and liberties of Americans from every encroachment,” says Barr.

You should bring in Peter Schiff as a economic adviser. He has it dead on. I am getting excited about this campaign.

You should not have to pander to the Paul supporters who are advocate the 9/11 truth. Our governement could not pull something like that off it they wanted to.

I do think they might have turned a blind eye to it. Not realizing the size and scope of the plan. They figured multiple hijackings not airplane missiles taking down the Twin Towers.

I just wanted to let all of you that have been asking about many of Barr’s policies and where to find them, you can become a Bob Barr supporter on facebook. I just looked at that page and to my surprise, he actually responds to people’s questions which is very interesting and cool. So…you could try asking him some questions and I am sure he will answer after seeing some of his responses to what other people have had to say.

Well said, Bob! In upholding the Constitution, you could make the same point with respect to marijuana and other illegal substances. Why did Prohibition require a constitutional amendment? Because it was otherwise outside federal purview. Same for the drug war, which is blatantly unconstitutional. Unfortunately, hardly any politicians think in those terms anymore, because it would shut down 90% of what the federal government does.

    tj,

most Ron Paul supporters are not “truthers”. The 9/11 truth movement hijacked the Paul campaign to try and further their cause and the media played along because that issue was one they could use to paint him as a poor candidate. The “truthers” killed Ron Paul.

There are “truthers” in almost every walk of life. The ones who made themselves vocal during the Paul campaign were magnified and became a useful tool for the media to turn people away from Paul. Paul does not support this movement.

Ron Paul is an outstanding advocate for Constitutional government, personal liberty, personal responsibility, and almost all of the other positions that Barr is running on. The difference is that Ron Paul has a 20+ year voting record of voting for these things in Congress, while Barr is a recent convert to these positions.

Please look into Ron Paul’s positions and his voting record before you label his supporters this way …

McCain is against what bush did on warantless wiretapping. McCain has hundreds of advisors. The advisor was talking about overseas warrantless wiretaps which McCain is for.

McCain has said Bush needs to follow the 1978 FISA law on domestic wiretaps.

McCain treasures the power of congress. He has served there for decades. He believes the president must follow the laws passed by congress.

McCain is also against signing statements. Obama is for them.

Lets stop the games of guilt by association and obsessing about advisors. This advisor is an economic policy advisor and has no expertise in this matter.

Sorry to burst your bubble, dariusz, but the US is a socialist country. It has been since at least the late 1980’s when we crossed the threshold from a mixed economy into a socialist one. Government now accounts for 40% of the GDP in direct taxation and accounts for at least another 10% of the GDP in deficit government spending and government regulatory mandates. That is well into the socialist realm.

    Douglas,

If what you say is true, then should McCain repudiate his advisor so that his stance is crystal-clear?
