Bob Barr is far superior on the issues when compared to Barack Obama or John McCain. He’s not perfect, but then again, nobody is. People are allowed to change their views.
I feel this is the year that the LP will crack a million votes nation-wide, but we need everybody that supports the Constitution and liberty on board. That means the Constitution Party people should vote for Bob Barr too. The alternative is much worse - WWIII with Iran.

We don’t, but he’s still my number two pick (and would become number one if Obama loses his religion on ending the War).
I want to see Bob in the debates, also! It’s time we had a real third party in America. I voted for Nader in 2000 for that reason.

I am a lifelong Conservative Republican who loved Ron Paul and am desperately seeking an alternative to John McCain. I cannot vote for him or 99.9% of other Republicans in good conscience. Any candidate who will fulfill the wishes of the forefathers, secure the border, eliminate the income tax, preserve the bill of rights, rescind the Patriot Act, and likes homeschoolers is my friend

Matt, Chuck Baldwin is the other candidate I am currently considering. Is Keyes his VP? I have issues with Keyes due to his horrid run for Senate here in IL (WHICH GOT OBAMA ELECTED!). I am leaning toward Barr because he has the experience to win & the LP is better organized. Liberty will definitely suffer under either Obama and McCain. Conservatives and frustrated Republicans need to support ONE candidate or there isn’t a chance to turn around our country. I see our nation drifting toward big government globalism and if we don’t do something in 2008, where will we be in 2012???

I have voted for the Constitution Party candidate in the last 3 Presidential elections. They had a real chance to put a viable candidate up this election, but “purist ideology” took over instead of practicality and they nominated a no-name of Chuck Baldwin (Chuck Who?) who is going nowhere. I then turned to see if the Libertarian Party would also let their “purist ideology” likewise bear sway over practicality as well. While it was close, I am happy to see that saner minds prevailed and they nominated my first choice (Congressman Bob Barr) for President and my second choice (Wayne Allyn Root) for Vice President. For this election it will be the Libertarian Party all the way!!! NOW I’M READY TO JOIN!!!!! I’m thoroughly excited about the prospect of having the Barr/Root ticket have a come-from-behind surprise victory since not many of the people that I know want to vote for either Obama or McCain (in fact, the prospect of those 2 alternatives sickens me as I’m sure it doesn many others as well). America is anxiously looking for a viable alternative to those 2 jokers and I believe that Bob Barr is just the man to fill that bill for the majority of American voters. GO BARR/ROOT!!!!!!!

Cant wait to get a Barr/Root ‘08 shirt and bumper sticker! I too joined the Libertarian Party after feeling like the GOP failed me. I still disagree with a handful of libertarian views but it’s so petty I hardly find it worth losing sleep over. I’m more focused on breaking the “two-party” monopoly in D.C.!!!!

The first time I saw Root speak was today on CSPAN during the LP Convention; I was very impressed with him, and I think Barr/Root is going to be a very good ticket. Just hope that all Libertarians will unite under Barr/Root. I don’t consider any Libertarian that used to be a Republican to be a “NeoCon”. NeoCons are the reason why most former Republicans, like myself, left the party. I’m proud to be a Libertarian, and from here on out I will do whatever it takes to help the LP grow.

As Chair of the Utah Libertarian Party, I voted in all six ballots today, and then left for the airport before the final results were announced. Congratulations to Congressman Barr. I voted for you because I think you are likely to be the most successful candiate our party has had. I urge my fellow LIbertarians to get to work, and to send money, to make this happen. This is our opportunity to really influence national politics. Let’s do it.

Very good and happy! Barr is the best LP candidate since Ron Paul in 1988. I just hoped Mary Ruwart would have been willing to be VP candidate, for better party unity, women vote, better appeal to Greens and Independents, but Root could be a good attack dog. Karen Kwiatkowski could have been an excellent VP choice as well, with recognition outside the LP as well, foreign policy experience and name recognition and intelligent etc.
Indeed, Russ would be a very good campaign manager, wish he could have been Paul’s campaign manager in the GOP primaries…

Pleased to have stumbled upon the libertarian convention on Cspan today. As a Republican who wondered what’s happened to the GOP “real” conservatives, I kept a close eye on Ron Paul, even voting for him in the PA primary.
Bob Barr is someone I could vote for a lot easier than Keating-5 McCain. He’s as much of a Reagan/Goldwater conservative-libertarian as magic bullet Arlen Specter. So I think I’m likely to be voting for Barr this time around. If you can get past the usual media blackout and get your message to the people, you would probably be shocked with how many people like myself you can draw from the GOP.
One thing I would critique though, is that if the LP really want to make a push on the national stage, they need to act accordingly. When I watch the convention and see people walking around with monkey masks and comical nose/ear rings it lends for your party not to be taken seriously.

TOO BAD Mr. Barr could not entice Ron Paul to run as the VP, if he had …”We the People” would have a real shot to SHOCK the establishment; win a few electoral states in November; and throw the election results to the House of Representatives.
….Then “We the People” would finally get to decide who will be OUR next President.

I agree with Dan above on being confused over your support for the Patriot Act at the same time your Issues page talks about how you’re opposed to intrusive government and loss of civil liberties and Constitutional rights. How is this not flip-flopping?
Additionally, your Issues section is too short on information about the many issues that are crucial to this election and the issues you have addressed are short on specificity. We WANT to know more about your candidacy but we want specifics.

I think there may be many unhappy Democrats this year if their chosen one does not win the primaries. Bob Barr may be a great alternate. I could never vote for McCain. I would like to know a little bit more about Bob Barr. Where does he stand on women’s rights? Pro-choice??? This is a big issue with many women and could be a deciding factor for many of us.

Yes! Alright! I joined the Libertarian Party in March this year. Another former disenchanted Republican after it was clear McCain would be the nominee. But I don’t think I could ever go back now. We need to begin a reach out not only to former Republicans, but also to Democratic supporters of whoever ends up loosing the Democratic nomination. Before they “settle” in to their nominee, or decide to go with McCain. We must do this. We can’t afford an McCain presidency, but even worse an Obama presidency. We need Bob Barr! The message of liberty, small government, and especially a non-interventionist foreign policy will resonate with Americans. Bob, we’re behind you. Aim for more than just more votes than any other Libertarian. Aim for the White House. If it’s going to happen any year, this will be the year! Barr 2008!

I don’t see how someone who doesn’t flatly support drug decriminalization can be on the Lib ticket. It’s just such a litmus test issue, in the sense that it demonstrates that the candidate both (1) truly supports individual rights, and (2) understands economics well enough to see the horrific unintended consequences of the Drug War (most crime in America, corruption, police state paramilitary and surveillance infrastructure, constant erosion of the Bill of Rights in drug cases, focusing border control and police resources away from violent criminals and terrorists, criminals marketing drugs to kids, needlessly spending hundreds of billions, etc. etc., etc., and of course NO MEANINGFUL REDUCTION IN DRUG USE). Legalizing a few soft drugs will not address ANY of these problems. They all need to be legalized (yes, even crack and heroine and meth, as bad as they are, although nothing is anywhere near as bad as either alcohol or tobacco in terms of societal damage. We seem to be able to get by with these mass killers legally available).
Americans need to be persuaded about this issue, not pandered to.
As a typical Ron Paul “spambot”, I doubt Barr will receive a tenth the support of Ron Paul unless he takes a principled non-pandering stand on this issue, and is VERY vocal about it.
I also have to say that it was an embarrassing experience having dinner last night with two close friends that happen to be ***, and having to explain why Bob Barr was our standard bearer. Real Libs very properly have real credibility with the *** community because we will stand shoulder to shoulder with them in support of their right to equal protection under the law. Now its an exercise in making excuses. It’s frankly a disaster.
Why do I get the feeling that this post will not make it on the blog?
All that said, Mr. Barr has always been one of my favorite congressmen, and if he does get some media attention (big “if”), it will be very positive for the process.

Oh, by the way, we “spambots”, members of meetup groups and a very close-knit and HUGE online community, talk to each other constantly. The meetup coordinators all talk. Blacklisting constructive criticism from this blog will be the surest way to make sure you don’t get Ron Paul’s support.
Your best bet is engagement, not to copy the media and blackout any opinions you don’t like. If you can’t support your positions in an open forum, you’re in big trouble. And it will also indicate you don’t understand the significance or nature of internet-based political movements.

RE: War on Drugs. Rob Kampia of the Marijuana Policy Project (MPP) gave a nomination speech for Bob Barr. Bob Barr has been lobbying for the MPP against his own legislation that over-turned D.C.’s medical marijuana laws. Rob Kampia and the other delegates from D.C. all voted for the nomination of Bob Barr.

I have reluctantly voted GOP the past 2 elections…2008 I am voting Barr/Root. I always thought that a vote for a third party was a vote for the Dems…especially here in Florida….it has taken me too long…but I have seen the light…I always knew that I was a Libertarian…but never voted that way….we need to do everything we can to get Barr into the debates….that will be the only way to shake things up…he needs to be polling at 15 percent to get into the debates…lets get to work!!

And I personally see nothing wrong with that DOMA, as it merely protects the States from being forced to recognize “*** marriages” from other States. Why should Utahans be forced to acknowledge the vastly different culture of, say, Massachusetts?
I think Barr has (and always has had) the correct approach to the matter: leave it to the States. That’s the Constitutional way and it must be upheld regardless of how we feel on the subject.
Personally, I think marriage should be legally defined as between a man and a woman, with a domestic partnership law to guarantee equal protection to ***/******* couples.
I do believe homosexuality is morally wrong, but I cannot force this viewpoint upon them. Shunning them is also the wrong approach. They’re our friends, neighbors, fellow citizens. I can only pray that God will convict them of their lifestyle and lead them to the truth.

Interestingly, Ron Paul has held the same views on abortion and *** issues, and voted accordingly, but I don’t see many Libertarians going after him for it. I’m not sure if Paul was in Congress when DOMA passed, but he has expressed his support for it, and voted for a ban on *** adoptions in the District of Columbia. Furthermore, he voted to ban partial birth abortions (which, from my perspective, is Constitutional, via the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment).

Having observed many elections, lets all remember after the initial euphoria and we move closer to the actual election, the punditocracy will suddenly ‘discover’ that Bob Barr is a fringe candidate. That we need a saviour, but it won’t be this year, such ashame, and its best not to waste your vote in a close election cycle.
They’ve got this schtick down to an art form, lets remind everyone that gets involved from the get-go, exactly what to expect, so they don’t get caught up in it.
Whatever dirt they dig up on Bob Barr, is nothing compared to what Obama and McCain have done in their public lives. And the only wasted voted, is a vote for tweedle dum or tweedle dee. Old school liberals and conservatives, see sawing back and forth from one to the other, doesn’t represent any type of true change, and every vote for that system, is the real wasted vote.
I’ve voted Libertarian in many election cycles, and I’ve been very proud of that, in the long run, the only wasted vote is the one you regret…I’m glad I’ve worked for change, and for however long it takes, I’ll continue to work for it.

I heard you on Glenn Beck and was pleased and surprised about what I heard. It never occurred to me to listen to the Libertarian party, part because the media doesn’t mention this party. Anyway, I happened to be in Denver this weekend and was at the Sheraton to pick up my cousin and was pleasantly surprised to see the convention being held. I did look at all who past hoping to see you, but never did. Doesn’t matter. Congratulations from Sunny Florida!!!

I hope the reason this site hasn’t been updated is that we are waiting for the new site. No updates since announcing the Barr won two days ago? I hope this isn’t how the campaign is planning on running.
I would of thought the day after the nomination was secured when I clicked on my bookmark for Barr I would of been redirected to the new site with a picture of Barr and Root together.

Is it LP rules that determine the VP candidate? In the big 2 parties, its the smoke-filled room that leaves us with such memorable VPs as Algore and Cheney. I was rather thinking that Barr would have the chance to choose his own running mate, or at least defer the choice to his supporters.
Oh well. As they’ve been saying all over town: ROOT who? The handsome fellow who looks and sounds more like a late night “get rich quick” televangelist? On the surface, Root looks like quality VP material, what with his winning smile and energetic speaking talent. But he will be a hard sell for anyone except the LP.
Gravel would have been a recognisable vote-swayer on the left side of the aisle. I regret that he wasn’t taken into consideration by the party etablissement.

I am extremely happy to see a Barr/Root ticket. I am glad that the delegates at the convention can entertain the possibility that people can change and learn. I made similar (although not exact) philosophical journey as you in roughly the same time frame. So I believe you to be sincere in you change on the patriot act, the drug war, and keeping the government out of our wallets and bedrooms. I will be voting for you and for the first time since I was 18 I won’t be holding my nose.
I am glad to see the LP getting serious, had we nominated another sub 1% candidate I would have left the party and stayed home on election day, I am glad that won’t be necessary.

Best wishes Mr. Barr. You mentioned your membership in the Hellcatcher club. And you caught a lot of hell to win the nomination.
You were gracious whenever needed. You listened to those who opposed to your nomination. You recognized the wonderful participants in the debate, including Mr. Kubby.
You asked that the convention support Mr. Root as your VP.
The convention finally gave your full ticket the victory.
Still, it was inspiring to have Senator Gravel in the debate and contesting for the nomination. It is fully understandable that he would prefer to focus on his initiative than seek to be VP.
Please seek the votes of all Americans, across all 48 states. Oops, there are 50, or maybe 57.
I understand there is a defined amount of time before the election and resources are not without limits.
Make all proud for this contest. And please share our thanks with your family for sharing your time and energy. It is a most important cause.

I am thirty years old and had never even registered to vote–I had never found a candidate who represented my beliefs. Today I registered so that I can vote for Bob Barr in November. It’s nice to have finally found a true conservative with common sense and ethics!

How can Barr make a speech emphasizing how we should waste one single day, then not update the site for the 2 days after his nomination?

Congratulations Mr. Barr and Mr. Root. As a Ron Paul supporter, I believe you are now the best chance to bring the message of Freedom and Liberty to the American people. You have my support!
I might suggest, as others have, that the website be updated to indicate Barr/Root 08 and the “Issues” section be much more specific and in-depth.

^^^Lance- I agree, these things should of been in place prior to the convention and ready to go first thing Monday morning.
I’m sure the staff has worked hard and is tired but face it they have only been at this a few weeks. The other parties candidates worked non-stop for a year or longer for the 3 left. The idea of taking a day off until after November is ridiculous. Barr should of had rallies scheduled around the country starting today.
The LP in their never-ending ability to demonstrate any knowledge of politics scheduled the convention during Memorial Day weekend. Not that the LP gets much news coverage but the little coverage the convention did get was seen by almost no one because it was a holiday weekend. Who looks at news on Memorial Day? This was the day Barr’s win was news.

Right now, we need to worry about preserving the liberty in this country and bringing back small government. I am a social conservative but I could care what Barr’s life stance or drug stance is. I am for getting government out of ALL marriages though *** marriage is a bit much — but that’s a culture issue, not a government issue. We can fight over the social issues later. Right now, we need to unite our forces to elect a President who will enforce the Constitution as written, protect our Constitutional rights, get rid of amendment 16, and tell the UN to go the H-E- you know where! I will be voting for Barr in 2008 and it is so nice to be able to vote for someone who isn’t one of two evils!
Oh, I love the McObama & McClinton phrase! I will be using that.

Someone wrote that Mr. Barr shares Dr. Paul’s views on a woman’s right to choose. My understanding is that Dr. Paul is against a woman’s right to choose. Is this correct?

I have been voting for Libertarian candidates since 92, been a registered Libertarian since 94, A party member since 95, and been giving the party regular monthly donations for some time now. I donated to Browne in 96, 2000, and Badnarik in 04.
I understand the concept of compromising one’s principles to achieve victory. That’s why I backed Browne against Hornberger, twice. (Right now Hornberger is somewhere, having a bittersweet laugh and saying “I told you so.”)
I also understand that there is a difference between compromising one’s principles, and selling them upriver entirely to support a man who will, at best, duplicate Perot’s 96 vote totals. A more realistic hope is that Barr outperforms Nader. How many states is Nader on the Ballot in, anyway? Barr should gaurantee that McCain loses to Obama. I mean, Obama should beat McCain anyway, but Barr can at least seal that particular deal. Small consolation. Small freakin consolaiton.
All of that having been said, I would like to thank Barr. No, honestly, I would. He just saved me a whole chunk of money. I supported the Libertarian party with my money every month; don’t have to do that anymore. I don’t have to give money monthly to the so-called LP Presidential candidate anymore, either. That’s money I can either save, or put to some other, more worthy cause.
If Barr actually manages to get on the ballot in Pennsylvania, then I suppose I will probably vote for him. But I will do it whilst holding my nose and clenching my teeth. And I sincerely hope there IS a walkout to create a true party of Liberty after the election is over, which the Libertarian Party no longer is.
Barr is pro-Iraq War, pro-Drug War, pro-PATRIOT Act (yeah sure he’s changed his mind. Like Dubya and crew changed their reasons for going into Iraq about a half dozen times). He is still a Republican. And by nominating him, the Libertarian Party has done far more than compromise it’s principles; it has transformed itself into the Second Republican Party. Third Republican Party if you count the “Constitution” party.
Voting for the lesser evil is still an evil, and eventually leads to greater evils; that’s how we got the Dubya administration in the first place. That’s the path that Barr’s nomination leads to.
There’s a difference between compromising one’s principles and complete sellout insanity. Barr’s nomination is an example of the latter.
Good luck, Second Republican Party. You’re going to need it.

I will never return to the Libertarian Party as it is clear to me they prefer name recognition to integrity in their candidate. Someone who voted for the Patriotic Act is someone I will never vote for. Period. I won’t compromise my principles and I won’t accept excuses to merit such poor judgement in an elected official. I hope you all reconsider and hold steadfast in protecting the Constitution.

Some of the post’s here are fueled by single issue’s rather than the whole package offered which is immature, selfish, and quiet frankly why our country is where it is today. However, there are issues more important than your whimpering little “I want this” attitude. Right now Americans need to vote for issues that will stabilize our country, then deal with the minor issues.
For instance:
Which is more important? The stabilization of our overall constitutional rights as Americans - or - who can marry who?
Which is more important? Securing our countries border from terrorists and the invasion of illegal immigrant’s - or - fighting the long lost law of drugs?
Which is more important? Securing our country’s future for our future generation’s - or - voting just to get your way today?
You self centered, single issue, narrow minded, immature, spoiled children need to think about our country and what is best for “ALL” of us for a change instead of “I want this & I want that” like you have all of your pathetic lives. There are thousands of military personnel that have gave their lives in the past and are still doing it today to save our constitutional rights of freedom and the integrity of our country, the very least you as an American can do is to “VOTE” for the important issues that directly effect these issues as a whole.
Who cares if people use drugs? They will whether we like it or not - they always find a way!
Who cares if someone lives with another person of the same ***? They will anyway - they always find a way!
Not a one of these “MINOR” individual issues will matter if we do not have the security of our constitutional rights or if we are dominated by these millions of invading illegal immigrants and lose or country or if enough terrorists come over our borders and destroy our country!!!!!
