Libertarian Endorsements

May 19th, 2008 by Shana Kluck

Summary of Endorsements for Congressman Barr-

It is my belief that Bob has always philosophically been a libertarian, and that he joined our ranks once it became abundantly clear that the Republican Party’s commitment to liberty is as vapid, shallow and non-existent as the Democrats, and that to try to reform the party from within is an exercise in futility. Bob Barr has garnered national exposure and name recognition far in excess of any other declared candidate for the LP nomination. Moreover, Bob Barr has garnered national exposure and name recognition far in excess of any other declared candidate for the LP nomination. Bob Barr also brings to the table an intangible but subtle quality which I don’t believe any of our other candidates have, and which we must have if we hope to ever break past the less than one percent vote total for our candidate:

He is “Presidential.”

As a delegate from the great state of Georgia, I am asking that you vote for former Georgia Congressman Bob Barr as our nominee for President of these United States.

-Lance Lamberton
Former Georgia Libertarian Party Executive Committee
Deputy Director of White House Policy Information under Reagan Administration
President and Founder of Cobb County Tax-Payers Association

There is only one candidate running for the LP nomination that can accomplish massive growth of the Kansas Libertarian Party – That candidate is Bob Barr.

I wholeheartedly endorse Bob Barr to be our Libertarian Presidential candidate for 2008. As a candidate on a lower political level for the LP (State Senate), I believe that there can be a positive trickledown effect from our presidential candidate. Having met and listened to most of our LP candidates — I believe that our best option for the 2008 political season is Bob Barr. I believe that we need someone who has media savvy, someone credible to those outside the LP world, someone who can debate McCain and Obama and present himself in a compassionate, reasonable and intelligent manner in representing the Libertarian Party. I will be voting (in Denver) for Bob Barr as our Libertarian Presidential candidate!

— Rob Hodgkinson
Kansas Libertarian Party State Chair
Advisory Board Chair of Atlas!Liberty
Candidate for Kansas Senate Dist. -37

Bob Barr is a candidate who can get the ‘foot in the door’ for libertarians. He’s media savvy, is well known, and credible. Just as important, he will speak to those in his former party who are disaffected by McCain. An active Bob Barr campaign should be welcome. It can be an effective tool for all Libertarians – radical and moderate – to further the cause of liberty beyond it’s current moribund state. Is some liberty better than none? Clearly, yes. It’s up to delegates to decide whether they want more liberty or remain satisfied with the status quo of diminishing freedoms in favor of an “all or nothing” approach. I strongly encourage delegates to consider the alternatives and support the best candidate going into Denver: Bob Barr!

— Gene Trosper
Former chairman of the Riverside County (CA) Libertarian Party

When a better candidate appears it is good to recognize it. I have terminated my campaign in favor of full support to Bob Barr and I encourage you to also support Bob Barr.

-Bob Jackson
Michigan businessman
Former Libertarian Party Presidential Candidate

Thank you, Mr. Barr, for formally announcing your candidacy for the Libertarian Party’s Presidential nomination. I look forward to meeting you in Denver and then the campaign thereafter. You have my full and enthusiastic support. We can bring the US Constitution back into the nation’s discourse and inform the American people that there is a better way that leads to peace, prosperity and liberty. Let’s win this!

-George Whitfield
Life Member of the Libertarian Party
Senior Director of Halcyon Search International

I heartily endorse the one man in the Libertarian Party who has a real world track record of political acumen and leadership skills: Bob Barr.

— Stephen P. Gordon
Chair, Libertarian State Leadership Alliance
Chairman, Libertarian Party of Alabama

In one of the best fields ever of Libertarian presidential aspirants, Bob Barr is the most qualified and most able to advance the Libertarian Party. I’ve not seen a candidate so able to capture the attention of the American public since Ed Clark in 1980. Bob Barr is my choice for the Libertarian presidential nomination.

-Mark Rutherford
Former LNC Member
Former Chair, Libertarian Party Indiana
Chairman of Atlas!Liberty PAC

Bob Barr has energized grass roots support for our party. I haven’t seen this kind of momentum for the LP in years.

— Jeff Bowles
Chair, Virginia Libertarian Party

Bob Barr has been a great asset in building the Libertarian Party. It was his principled integrity that attracted us to him and brought him to the Libertarian Party. His credibility, good ideas, and hands-on help have already made a real difference.

— Daniel N. Adams
Chair, Georgia Libertarian Party

Bob Barr has certain name ID and credibility that exceeds the other candidates. Based on my conversations with him, I’m convinced he is a small-government libertarian and he is exactly what the Libertarian Party needs to move us forward.

-Jimmy Blake, MD
Former Chair, Alabama Libertarian Party

Please Bob Barr, run… I am behind you 100%… You have the message of liberty. Please run… I think you could fix this country.

-Lisa Leeds
Candidate in 08 State House Dist. 58 TN
Vice Chair Libertarian Party Nashville, TN

It’s incredibly exciting to see the “freedom movement” continue under the LP banner and with an amazing leader like Bob Barr.

-Shana Kluck
Executive Committee, Alabama Libertarian Party
Former Ron Paul 2008 Alabama Field Coordinator
Former National Coordinator- Homeschoolers for Ron Paul

Bob Barr is the best Libertarian Presidential candidate for 2008. Running on libertarian campaign platform of cutting government spending, defending Constitutional liberties, and ending the War in Iraq, Barr has the potential to spread this message to the millions of Americans who favor smaller government and expanded personal liberty. This is a time for Libertarians to run specificially against the failed Republican policies of the last eight years, out of control spending, the destruction of the Bill of Rights and separation of powers, and a foreign policy of preventative war and nation building.
Bob Barr is the candidate for 2008.

Economics Professor at The Citadel
Assistant organizer of the Charleston County Ron Paul meet-up.
Former member of the James Island Town Councl
Libertarian Candidate for Congress 2000
Former member of the Charleston County Planning Board
Former Chairman of the Charleston County Libertarian Party

The Libertarian Party has a rare opportunity in the prospect of having Bob Barr as our presidential nominee. No other candidate, past or present, possesses the leadership skills and experience, combined with true plausibility as a national candidate. I look forward to voting for Bob in Denver and campaigning for him afterwards.

-Mark Bodenhausen
Regional Chair, Libertarian Party, Alabama 1995-1999
Vice Chair, Libertarian Party, Alabama 1999-2000
Chairman Emeritus, Libertarian Party, Alabama 2000-2006
LNC Region 4 (Southeast) Representative, 2006
Libertarian Party Candidate, US Congressional District 6, Alabama 1991
Libertarian Party Candidate, Alabama Secretary of State 2000
Candidate, Birmingham City Council 2005

I served on the LNC with Bob Barr about a year and half. He’s very bright. What Barr brings as a presidential candidate is the media, a campaign staff with real experience running a third party presidential campaign , one of best fund raisers in the country, and experience campaigning and winning (something none of our other candidates can even claim). Barr has been speaking on behalf of libertarians since he’s been on the LNC. He understands libertarianism.

-Hardy Macia
Former Libertarian Party State Secretary, Vermont
Founder and former Chair, Town of Grand Isle Libertarian Party
Former Gubernatorial Candidate, Vermont
LNC, Region 7 Representative

I urge the delegates to support Bob Barr.  For candidates seeking opportunities to win local elections, having a well-known Libertarian like Bob Barr at the top of the ticket will help them win those elections.

I hope the delegates take a good hard look at who has the ability to bring positive notoriety to the Party and our candidates.  While a good Libertarian Presidential candidate may not be the reason that local candidates win, a bad candidate who may bring negative attention to the party can keep a good local candidate from winning.

Bob Barr has the ability to grow our party and bring positive attention to our nation’s entire slate of local candidates.

 -Brad Klopfenstein
Former Executive Director, Libertarian Party of Indiana
Member, Indianapolis Metropolitan Board of Zoning Appeals

Many of the declared candidates for the Libertarian Party nomination would surely do an exemplary job of representing Libertarian principles in this year’s presidential campaign. But only one of these candidates, Bob Barr, has the experience, name-recognition, media savvy and political skills to break through the mainstream media’s censorship of third-party campaigns.

With Bob Barr at the top of the LP’s ticket, Libertarians of all stripes, running for office at all levels, will benefit from the publicity that his campaign generates. Libertarian Bob Barr offers us an unprecedented opportunity to break out of anonymity and become a recognized political force in America.

There seems to be a disturbing resistance and even conspriracy theories about Bob Barr’s nomination, the positive reporting by Stephen Gordon on thirdpartywatch, the sell of TPW to Richard Viquerie etc. by not only some “radicals” within the LP, but even some candidates. In today’s discussion on Kubby’s blogradio about the “radicals” and “reformers” the founder of the LP David Nolan even called on Barr to be “stopped” at the convention this weekend. They are apparently falsely afraid of a “takeover” of the LP by Viguerie, who will also speak at the convention. Well, Nolan said himself Barry Goldwater Jr. was in a certain sense the founder of the LP. Interesting that he is known as “Mr. Conservative” and Viquerie also continued the Goldwater Revolution with the direct main order system

An information strategy need to be in place. The convention will be not be without a strong heated discussion, I am sure.

  8. David Keene Says:

Bob Barr believes in defending individual freedoms and hopefully will send the message that personal liberties are precious, should be regarded as sacred and that loving your country and defending basic individual freedoms and rights guaranteed by the U.S. constitutional law are the concepts that set this country apart from so many other countries over 230 years ago and that love for your government over your country and the rights guaranteed by the constitution is in opposition of what our founding fathers intended – liberty, justice for all and limited government. Respect your government but question it at all times lest it get overpowering as it currently is - that is an U.S. citizen’s right and duty. I hope that’s the message Mr. Barr wants to convey. If it is then he has my vote.

the money bomb almost raised $2K! bob barr is a hard brand to sell to ron paul supporters. ron paul would have to make the sell himself.

the thing i like about bob barr is that he isn’t a purist. he wants to take a more responsible, less frightening approach to reducing big government. i think this is much more digestable by the masses. after years of purists in the libertarian party, it is nice to see someone who has a realistic view of things.

as such, it is going to take libertarian moderates like newt gingrich and john linder to endorse and promote bob barr. mccain is not a conservative. newt gingrich and john linder both should endorse bob barr since he more closely represents their views.

don’t get discouraged. i wouldn’t expect any big name endorsements outside of the libertarian party until after the nomination.

  13. Stefan Says:

Keith, it seems as if Barr may get Keene’s endorsement (see above), he is the CEO of the ACU, thus a very big potential endorsement. Forget about Newt, he changed his view re. “global warming” and does not have the real power anymore and will not endorse Barr. The main issue now is winning the nomination, as it is not a sure thing and there are now active forces against Barr, who want to stop him. IMHO a Barr-Ruwart ticket would be a good unifying ticket and both of them have a common connection/admiration of Ron Paul. I do not buy Root’s rhetoric at all and Dr. Phillies would be horrible. Important is also the platform they decide on.
Endorsements are not necessarily going to attract a lot of votes, more a dedicated grassroot support. Till after the RNC Paul will probably not endorse anyone, I think, after all he is still running and he will be giving away his power and influence at the RNC if he is to endorse any third party candidate. I think he will see how the RNC HQ handles him and the supporters. Only after the RNC most of the supporters might jump on board actively. If Barr does not get the LP nomination and the LP go back to the 04 platform, maybe Barr should reevaluate his position with the LP? He is a friend of Howard Phillips also, maybe they would rearrange the CP ticket to a Barr-Baldwin one? and see if they can get max ballot access with the help of RP meetup groups etc. This would also mean the Ron Paul supporters would not be so split between CP, LP and conservative Greens. OR he should run for office, congress or senate as an Independent or a third party banner and we make sure he wins, along with the Ron Paul candidates.

I think the nomination is in the bag!!! Congressman Barr will once again bring the ideology and philosophy and freedom, liberty, individualism, and personal responsibility back in to the presidential campaign discussion. It surely isn’t there now with the three major candidates running. All I hear is more and more about what the government plans to do for me. Each time the government does something for me, it ends up costing me either a right or more than a few bucks!!! Bring the debate back to reality, Bob!!!

Maybe he just need a “Bob Barr girl” and a singer like “Aimee Allen” with a video to get some excitement from young people… perhaps they can produce a video with his family and more background info, the wonderful work of his wife etc. e.g., that more personal touch…

Some new poll data just released today from Zogby.

    http://www.zogby.com/news/ReadNews.dbm?ID=1511

The survey hints that Libertarian Bob Barr could do some serious damage to McCain by stealing support among the very conservative and libertarian voters. Barr wins 10% support among those self-described “very conservative” voters, and wins 22% among philosophical (not necessarily “capital L”) libertarians. As McCain continues to angle for moderate support on the campaign trail, Barr could create havoc for him among McCain’s political base.

This is a huge new confirmation that Bob Barr could really compete with John McSame for the true L vote. Winning 22% of libertarians is just the start. If he can consolidate this support and increase support among Conservatives, 20%+ is within reach by Summer… After McCain bombs at the convention and the Democrats make him look like an old coot, Bob Barr will be there to lap up the peel away votes.

I’m going to make my first donation as soon as he’s the official nominee.

    Greetings Bob Barr Supporters:

My $upport is on the way!

I got strong support on dKos to the question of whether or not I should donate to Bob Barr as an Obamaiac…

I’d much rather the Libertarian party control the arguement across the aisle than the Republican Party, which I believe is now morally bankrupt.

I thought before I’d make my first donation, I’d ask a few questions:

    1) Do you, as the bloggers for Barr, accept donations from someone like me?

    2) What states do you expect Barr to really play hard in? I expect Alaska, Georgia, Texas, Missouri, and maybe Virginia to be good turf.

    3) Will this be a multi-year effort, similar to Paul’s Revolution, for the heart of the “Right” moral compass? I want more Libertarian and less Neo-Conservatives.

    Thanks!

  19. Stefan Says:

    1) I think anyone is free to donate to Barr, no one barred. Barring someone to donate would be very un-libertarian.
    2) The Barr campaign would know the answer to your question best, but will not reveal. Personally yes, I agree he will do well in the states you mentioned as well as some more to the north and west.
    3) Yes, the Ron Paul (and Bob Barr) Revolution has actually just gotten started, they are in two different parties working towards the same ideals and it will be a multi-year effort, but take less tan 16 years and will
be successful in implementing the shrinking of government, not only preaching it.
