Barr Seen As Serious Threat

May 15th, 2008 by Shana Kluck

Barr’s recent announcement to run for President on the Libertarian ticket has provoked a firestorm of media attention- most focusing on the viability of his candidacy. Tobin Harshaw at the New York Times claims that Congressman Barr is a threat that the GOP is taking very seriously.

While Paul has been a thorn in McCain’s side ever since he became the presumptive nominee, Barr seems to be the threat the G.O.P. is taking more seriously for now.

Former Rep. Bob Barr says a number of Republicans have been trying to persuade him not to run for president on the Libertarian Party ticket, but none has given him a convincing reason.

    Justin,

There are many difference but the most important one is that for all intent and purpose Ron Paul is no longer running for president. He hasn’t officially dropped out of the Republican primary race but he lost that last fall when he refused to stand up for himself during the debates and allowed himself to be smacked down by every moderator and candidate on the stage.

So your big difference is that you won’t be able to vote for Dr. Paul in November but you will be able to vote for Barr provided he wins the LP nomination.

Thank you for running, Bob. I’ll be donating to your campaign and you’ll certainly get my vote in November (should become the LP nominee). I can’t stomach the thought of having to pull the lever for any the three stooges (McCain, Obama or Hillary) currently in the mix. McCain sealed his fate last week when he jumped on board the global warming wagon and said it was going to be his #1 priority. Sad to think that McCain, Hillary or Obama is the best that America has to offer. We deserve better.

To liberty and God save our beloved republic!

    Justin,
There really is little to no difference between Bob and Ron(congressional voting records aside), The political platforms they espouse are almost identical. Ron Paul is just a messenger, there are many. Rather that use your write in perrogative, you have a chance to elevate another voice for our cause.

  12. Victor Aguilar Says:

There is a BIG difference between Bob Barr and Ron Paul: Barr is not a member of a cult (The Mises Institute) and Ron Paul is.

Ron Paul refused to publically endorse the statement “critiques and rebuttals are how science advances” and I responded by spending thousands of dollars (at four cents per hit) on the following Google Ad Words campaign:

    7 Questions for Ron Paul
Post these 7 questions on Paulite blogs,
    watch his followers squirm.
    http://www.axiomaticeconomics.com/critiques/critiques12.php

I am prepared to spend thousands more to ENDORSE Bob Barr, but only if he will publically agree with the following statement, to prove that he is not a cultist:

“Critiques and rebuttals are how science advances.”

If McCain, Clinton or Obama wins, we have nothing but the same ‘Ol same ‘Ol politics and that is a fact. It is up to the people in this country with common sense to send a strong message to the clowns in Washington. Bob, if your gonna run, you better run hard, and make it one hell of a fight! RUN BOB!

  15. Conservative Says:

What a disappointment. History tells us two things- 1) third party candidates don’t get elected and 2) third party candidates hurt the candidate whose political position is closest to the third party candidate. Thanks to Ross Perot we had Bill Clinton. All Bob Barr can do is hand the Presidency to Obama- the most liberal member of the U.S. Senate. I have been disappointed in the Republicans in a number of areas but for Bob Barr to push the election to Obama is insane. Let’s put Bob Barr back in congress but get him out of the Presidental race. Please Bob, come to you senses.

I’m glad to see this happening. There was really no one to vote for in this election. Obama is almost a given as the Democratic Nominee and neither he nor Mccain has anything substantial to offer the country.

Considering the Democrats nominated McCain to run as a Libertarian. It would be nice to see Bob Barr pick up Newt Gingrich or Mike Huckabee to run on the ticket. That would be a serious threat.

  21. Mikester Says:

How is Bob Barr different from Ron Paul: Two big ones come to mind right away:

    1) Bob Barr wants to replace the income tax with the Fair Tax. Ron Paul would just abolish it, to be replaced with nothing.

    2) Bob Barr supports fighting the drug war through interventionism in South America. Ron Paul would end the drug war.

These are just two, see this post for a great breakdown of more about what the Libertarian delegates (of which I am one) will be thinking in Denver:

  22. Keith Gardner Says:

Here is my understanding of the differences between “Dr. No” and Bob Barr.

    1) Bob Barr would drastically reduce spending, but not to the extent of Ron Paul. Realistically, both would have to work on Congress so progress would limited. Thus, Bob Barr takes a more realistic stance, drastically cut spending and reform the tax system with something like the Fair Tax.

    2) Bob Barr would still fight the War on Drugs on the federal level but still allow states (not DC) to legalize it without federal intervention.

    3) Bob Barr would withdraw from Iraq more responsibly than Ron Paul.

Things that Ron Paul and Bob Barr have in common that are of concern to Libertarians.

    1) I think both Ron Paul and Bob Barr believe *** rights should be decided on the state level. Not sure of Ron Paul’s position.

    2) Both are pro-life. Not sure of Bob Barr’s position.

In conclusion, Bob Barr would be a candidate more like Mike Huckabee who won the traditional Republican states, only a little more in tune with increasing state rights, protecting civil liberties, reducing spending, and using the military more conservatively.

I’m glad a recognizable name is running for the LP as far as getting
us some favorable press. But I still have some reservations as far as Mr.Barrs past voting record goes.Overall I’m glad He’s in the race,
With Ron Paul not being on the ballot there is No fiscal conservative
    represented in this race.

http://www.ontheissues.org highlights voting records of all the candidates pretty well. I’m a staunch conservative who wants limited government. I used to work in the government. The less money they have, the less they will waste. I also like Bob’s position on school vouchers. It will help the country’s declining educational system in more ways than throwing even MORE money at education. You’ve got my vote and total support Bob (just be careful how we pull out of Iraq)!!

  27. Sally Eastman Says:

I think that Bob Barr should get the LP nomination and then select a running mate who is an articulate and intelligent African-American female. She should be someone from academia perhaps, or maybe someone who is a current Democrat who has very classic liberal leanings that would blend well with Barr’s conservatism. A combination such as that would absolutely get the attention of the country and the media! If Barr could not find a woman of color who would be appropriate, then he should try to find a Hispanic woman. The LP this year will gather millions of votes!

  28. Tom Says:

Bob Barr, you’re a complete idiot. On the GOP side, we want to do everything to not give a chance to obama/clinton to be the next president. McCain and Huckabee would be a great ticket for the election. Just stop yourself, you’re a disgrace.

I wasn’t going to vote. But I am now that I have a candidate. As the parties have changed over time, I believe the Libertarian Party is what the Republican Party used to be 25 years ago. I’m glad to be part of this movement and hope all disgruntled Americans will join us!

Glad to see Bob Barr is running on the libertarian ticket. I do not live in GA, but remember Bob as being one of the few who always championed school vouchers and I never forgot that. Count me as another Republican who will be pulling the straight Libertarian ticket. As someone else said up here, there has to be someone better than the same old, stale choices that always get to the top because of their daddies name or their fat wallets. Also, be sure to donate folks and put your money where your mouth is - I will be this week.

  31. Matthew M. Says:

I applaud Bob for running, and hope he gets the LP nom this month! I would love to see a three-way Obama/Barr/McCain race. I think Bob, given the momentum, the right running mate (Ron Paul?) and fair, equal media coverage could have a great shot at winning over the majority of McCain’s constituency, and maybe even some of Obama’s youth vote.

Let’s face it, a lot of conservatives grudgingly accepted McCain as our nominee. They’re not happy with him. The doors are still open for someone they would be happy with.

Get the media on your side Bob, that’s the first step. Do what it takes to get on those front-pages and your candidacy will take off! Good Luck at the convention!

    Barr ‘08.
