‘Washington Times’ on Bob Barr
May 11th, 2008 by StaffFormer Rep. Bob Barr says a number of Republicans have been trying to persuade him not to run for president on the Libertarian Party ticket, but none has given him a convincing reason. The former Republican congressman from Georgia formed an exploratory committee last month and told The Washington Times he has since been subjected to the behind-the-scenes pressure from Republicans not to run.
Mr. Barr says even people who have tried to dissuade him understand why he thinks it important to raise issues from what he calls a “genuinely conservative” perspective and to offer alternatives to the positions of the two major-party candidates.
“In the month since we formed our exploratory committee, not a single Republican who has spoken with me to try and convince me not to seek the Libertarian nomination has disagreed with my reasons for considering a run,” Mr. Barr told The Times today in an e-mail exchange before leaving London on a flight to Atlanta.
Most Republicans who asked him not to run “also said they understand why I’d run and why John McCain is not conservative and will not seriously tackle the growth in government power and spending,” he said. “Some said they would vote for me if I ran, but for the sake of the Republican Party, they would prefer I didn’t.”
Mr. Barr will speak tomorrow at the National Press Club.

Don’t listen to them. Please continue to run hard sir. Help restore liberty to America, pick up where Ron Paul is leaving off.
May 12th, 2008 at 10:18 am
I am very disappointed that the only options we have for President are Hillary, Obama and McCain. In a country so richly blessed you would think someone of morals, and business sense would run. It is a no brainer when jobs leave our country so does income and spending. I don’t understand how our government can allow companies to leave and charge so little to let them send the garbage they make back into our country. When Mattell pulled out of KY I quit buying their toys, and any other company that leaves here as far as I am concerned they can sell their junk to whoever they are providing jobs for. I will have to see what Mr Barr stands for in order to vote for him.
May 12th, 2008 at 11:55 am
The american people deserve choices. Go Barr!
May 12th, 2008 at 12:03 pm
Run, Bob, run! And run to win. This is the Year of Change, and don’t think that it can’t happen in the biggest way possible in American politics: a third-party President. And finally one whose views are based on the Constitution, who will obey its scope on the purpose of the federal government. Bob, if your campaign catches fire, and I suspect it will, this can happen. You must reach out to “anti-war” Democrats too. They may be against the Iraq war for different philosophical reasons than we Libertarians are against all interventionist foreign policy, but that’s fine. They fit with us on this issue. And you can’t win by reaching only disenchanted former Republicans such as myself, and life-long Libertarians. You must have a coalition that includes Democrat-leaning voters as well. That’s what’s great about Libertarian thought…it lends itself to coalition building, much more than statist liberalism and moralistic conservatism.
Let’s do it, Congressman! To President Barr!
May 12th, 2008 at 12:04 pm
Go Bob! It’s time voices of freedom and liberty were heard. Ron Paul’s campaign was the beginning of a grassroots movement, and Bob’s campaign will take it a step further yet. If we can get Bob in the debates, people will hear how much sense he makes and will not be able to help but give him a chance.
May 12th, 2008 at 12:50 pm
Run but do it only if you are going to run on true conservative priciples. Be a real conservative and do it with passion and without appology and you will see voters from all over vote for you. I am a life long conservative republican and the reublican party has left me with no option. I WILL STAY HOME AND NOT VOTE IF McCain is my most conservative option.
May 12th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
Mr. Barr,
Thank you so much for running! Forgive my coarseness for I’m tired of talking lightly … Thank you for having the balls to stand up for what you believe in and setting the example as it was once set by our country’s Found Fathers.
I admire your courage and wish you well in the upcoming months!
May 12th, 2008 at 1:02 pm
Bob, you are a MORON! When Obama gets elected because of you, I hope he taxes you at 90%.
May 12th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
Good, maybe a republican defeat will remind them they are supposed to be the small government, non-tax-spend party. I will be voting for Bob Barr. I am tired of voting for big government spenders in Republican clothing.
May 12th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
I would rather vote for someone I believe in, even if I know they are not likely to win. That is better than voting for someone I detest, but not quite as much as the other person.
May 12th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
I’m assuming you stand toe-to-toe with Ron Paul’s principles? Heck…maybe the media will give YOU a fighting chance. Good luck.
May 12th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
As a die hard Clinton supporter, this is great news should she not become the nominee. Obama is deluded to think he can swing Clinton supporters in his favor….Wrong, he cannot.
Should Clinton not get the superdelegates to vote in favor of her, over Obama, at least we have another choice. While the superdelegates should realize that Clinton can only beat McCain, Obama will lose many votes and may not be able to even compete with McCain.
Independents and Clinton supporters will really throw this election now with a true libertarian jumping in. Thank goodness….
May 12th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
I would much rather see Bob Barr as the next President of the United States than any of the other candidates but he should have gotten into the race sooner. With him getting in so late I’m afraid a vote for Bob Barr will be a vote for Obama (assuming he gets the dem. nomination). I think it would be unimaginably unfortunate if Mr. Barr causes us to spend the next four years with someone like Obama or Hillary as president!!!
Mr. Barr, PLEASE RECONSIDER!

http://blog.washingtonpost.com/capitol-briefing/2008/05/barr_has_been_spending_freely.html
Barr Has Been Spending Freely
Former GOP Rep. Bob Barr (Ga.) announced his candidacy for the Libertarian Party’s presidential nomination today, saying that Americans deserved a choice beyond what the Democratic and Republican candidates can offer.
But if Barr really is disillusioned with the two major parties, he hasn’t shown it with his wallet.
Barr, who helped manage President Clinton’s impeachment in 1998 and then lost his House seat following redistricting in 2002, nominally quit the Republican party in December 2006. Barr said at the time that the direction of the GOP had been “bothering me for quite some time” and called himself a “proud, card-carrying Libertarian.”
Since then, Barr has continued to exercise his inherent right to dole out campaign cash, and his political action committee — now known as the Bob Barr Leadership Fund — has contributed money to roughly two-dozen Republican members of Congress, according to Federal Election Commission records. Recipients of Barr’s largess have included some decidedly moderate, non-Libertarian types like GOP Reps. Christopher Shays (Conn.) and Deborah Pryce (Ohio) and Sen. Norm Coleman (Minn.).
Barr also gave $1,000 last year to the presidential effort of a former Libertarian nominee, Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), just a few weeks after he gave money to another White House campaign — that of former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore, who is now running for Senate. Further complicating Barr’s post-partisan (or bipartisan? tripartisan?) stance, his last recorded PAC contribution, made in February, went to … a Democrat: Rep. Tom Allen, a candidate for Senate in Maine.
Of course, Barr’s PAC has also given at least $8,500 to the Libertarian National Committee. So he’s got almost all of his bases covered. As of March 31, his committee still had $166,000 on hand. Maybe he’ll throw some cash the Green Party’s way, just to be fair.

Mr Barr.
I am an active duty Sergeant in the U.S Marine Corps. All I have to say is that thank you god we live in a country where people have the balls to stand up and go against the grain, pissing off the parties with worthless candidates….keep pissing them off Mr. Barr; maybe this will finally make the republicans get off their hands and finally fight for what is needed in this country; Integrity, Responsibility, and Courage.
May 12th, 2008 at 4:53 pm
I am truly excited about the prospects of a true conservative running. Barrack Hussien Obama talks of change, Hillery just talks, and McCain-well we know McCain. It is time for change from the run of the mill Washington elitist politics-GO BARR!!!! True change will only come when we usher out both Dems and Reps.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
May 12th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
I believe that Bab Barr will enact some stunning ideas that the current policical system does not even have a clue even exists. Bob’s vision will lead to the greatest political upset of all times.
May 12th, 2008 at 5:18 pm
Run, Bob, Run!
I made the decision more than a decade ago to never vote for the lesser of two evils. I will vote my conscience even if the GOP thinks I am “throwing away my vote.” During my lifetime I have seen the Republicans turn into Democrats, and the Democrats turn into Socialists. I’m getting lonely out here on the far right end of the political spectrum. It’s good to see that we might yet turn the tide of leftist progressivism.
May 12th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
Mr. Barr, As a republican that is also dissatisified with the current slate of contenders, i was very pleased to see that you have decided to run for the Office Of The President as a Liberatarian. You will get my vote, Sir. I have long been a supporter of you and hope you win the election!

I suppose Mr. Barr has changed since representing his Georgia district in the House. He was once a solid Neocon— and that is not traditional conservative considering their big spending and promoting government intrusion into personal lives and decision-making.
Maybe he has seen the light. We really don’t need more McCains’ and Romneys’ flipping to pander to a base that has served as corporate pawns.
May 12th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
Mr Barr I believe in what you are doing by standing up and speaking your mind I as a liberal believe this country was founded by choice and free speach and not having much of a choice in presidential candidates makes you not even want to vote but i have listened to your ideas and statements and will be voting for you this election.
May 12th, 2008 at 7:59 pm
I first had my doubts about Bob Barr. Now I realize that putting McCain in as President is Absolute Political Suicide for we conservatives. We would be selling out soul if we voted for John McCain. Everything that conservatives have established would be dissolved, completely reversed if John McCain were elected.
Surprisingly there really is enough time, and enough conservatives, Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians, and Independents who could put Bob Barr into the presidency. Fox news is now 100% behind John McCain and the regular media is 100% behind Obama. This country is screwed if either one of these Jokers (McCain or Obama) get elected. I can image that at least 42% of the voting public will support and vote for Bob Bar, That leaves a split of 58% of the vote for both McCain and Obama. Conservatives could win. 28% for Obama and 20% for McCain WOW!!!! Lets Do it.
May 12th, 2008 at 8:24 pm
In my opinion if you want to use your campaign funds wisely, do it in a way that shows you seriously love this country. Instead of wasting the money like the other candidates do, why not use your money to pay for parks to be built or go to a poor school and buy instruments and books for the kids? The media will take care of your advertising and you will gain more supporters and more money. Even if you don’t win the presidency, you can use your candidacy to make America better. That’s what a TRUE American would do. I believe in you, good luck!
May 12th, 2008 at 8:47 pm
It’s takes a hell of a lot more than simply saying, “I am a Reagan Republican” or “I am a ‘foot-soldier for the Regan Revolution’” to show that a Repubilcan candidate for President holds in his or her heart the sort of Goldwater-Republican notions of liberty, freedom, common sense and emancipation from grossly enlarged federal goverment. For years I have toyed with the idea of embracing the Libertarian movement, since it seems to be most closely aligned with Goldwater-Republican ideals as well as my very own ideas of liberty and freedom.
Until now, it seems, the Libertarian candidates have been sort of token nominations, just to keep that party’s ideas out there for, at the very least, some discussion and consideration. I am hopeful that Bob Barr is different. I have watched him for years as a Republican leader in the House, and have no reason to doubt his credibilty as a quality leader of our forgotten Republican principals or as a leader of our country. He has proven his leadership in difficult times for years while a member of Congress.
I expressed my views about Bob Barr today to a Republican-leaning friend of mine. His response was, “Isn’t a vote for Barr, a vote for Barrack?” I totally disagree with Obama on all the “issues” - like the war on terror, taxes, health care, and the like. Personally I believe it would be best for our nation if the first black president is from the Republican ranks - a Powell or Rice for example. However, if he truly believes it, and if he will truly do all in his power to carry it out, Obama’s message of “one America” (as opposed to Edward’s theme of two America’s - a sort of class warfare notion promoted by most Democrats) is a very real idea of what will happen in America at some point. My question to you all is, “Why not now?”
Bob Barr may be best. If the vote were held today, he would get my vote. If he pans out the way I believe he will, I will support him and promote his candidacy as much as I can. But - if voting for Barr promotes our message and demonstrates the seriousness of our principals, elects him as the principaled leader that he is over one of the politicians our Republican party chose to nominate and support, or enables a black American unifier to rise to power and hopefully once and for all lead us to a color-blind society, who the hell loses?
Think about it.
May 12th, 2008 at 8:49 pm
Bob I have kept track of you for years & this is good news-I am a republican who voted for Bush twice & now I curse his name-how can you have a war on terror & not defend our borders? And the insane spending!!!! I was not going to vote for any of the phony candidates this time so you poped into the race just in time-I WILL NO LONGER VOTE FOR THE LESSOR OF TWO EVILS-God Bless&GO BOB GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
May 12th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
First of all, let me say that I was not going to vote this year. That is, until I heard that Bob Barr was running on the Libertarian ticket. For the first time in 25 plus years, I will NOT be voting for a Republican.
I WILL BE VOTING FOR BOB BARR!!!
I am sick and tired of how these mealy-mouthed liberals and moderates (McCain) treat these illegal aliens like they’re legal citizens of this country. McCain and Obama are going to give amnesty to MILLIONS of illegal aliens, just for political oneupmanship.
I’m with you Bob; just make sure that you ENFORCE the immigration laws currently on the books, and fight for SMALLER GOVERNMENT with lower taxes. Your past voting record shows a real conservative background. KEEP IT THAT WAY WHEN YOU’RE ELECTED!!
BOB BARR FOR PRESIDENT: YIPPEEE!!!
May 12th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
There is barely a shred of difference between John McCain, Clinton, and Obama. And that may be too generous.
For too long conservatives and Christians have been told to “vote for the lesser of two evils”. That usually means, “Hold your nose and vote Republican”. The problem with this is that we keep getting more and more evil every election. Nothing changes. Government grows larger and ever more powerful. Our liberties and rights become fewer and scarcer.
Voting Republican is trashing your vote. Voting Republican is a vote for a police state and big government.
Bob Barr represents an opportunity to vote our principles and not compromise.
There is nothing dishonorable about being a principled, non-compromising voter. Vote Bob Barr for President!
May 12th, 2008 at 10:00 pm
Congressman Barr,
I disagree with you on a few issues just as I do with the other candidates running for President. However I find you to be a man of great integrity, honor and constitutional awareness; which is something that has been lacking for a long time in D.C. You will get my serious consideration just on the above. I am truly undecided. But I am pleased that you’ve decided to run for President. Hopefully the media will give you the opportunity to address the issues in a national debate format with the other candidates.
May 12th, 2008 at 10:04 pm
If you can get on the ballot in Oklahoma, I will be more than happy to vote for you.
May 13th, 2008 at 12:20 am
Bob will be the spoiler to a democratic President. Don’t you get it?
May 13th, 2008 at 12:28 am
Go ahead. Run Mr. Barr. With Mr. Verney (Ross Perot’s old advisor) at your side, the results are certain to be the same as ‘92. Only this time we’ll get Barack Obama instead of a Clinton (although another Clinton is still a slim possibility).
Mr. Verney says niether Republicans or Democrats can change the direction the country is headed. But which direction more closely resembles yours? If Mr. Barr and Mr. Verney had to vote for Barack/Hillary or Sen. McCain for whom would they vote? Think about that and put your vanity aside. Be reasonable. Withdraw your candidacy. Thank you!
P.S. William… If you and your libertarian cohorts vote for Mr. Barr because you’re disillusioned with the Republican party, don’t cry to me when you get the original and biggest tax and spend party instead, the Democrats. Think twice about throwing your vote away!
May 13th, 2008 at 3:36 am
I have said this to people around here. The choice between McCain and Barr rests on who McCain picks for his Vice-President. If he chooses someone who wishes to violate principles involving the food I and my children eat, like Mike Huckabee or Mitt Romney, I will pledge to move my vote to Bob Barr in the Generals.
I would suggest that if Bob is serious about this, and I mean REALLY serious, that he would be willing to pick a running mate that has some clout in Washington with real values. You can find one or two in Congress, and Ron Paul is not one of them.
May 13th, 2008 at 8:51 am
it would be truely great to see a true American win the presidencecy! these political partys have run their course and dont reflect what America needs!infact these political partys are ruining our great country by all the bickering between partys they dont get anything accomplished to help America or Her people resulting in a lousy ecconomy, loss of jobs to other countrys and a dollar thats almost worthless! go for it Bob and goodluck!we need someone that has the countrys benifit in mind!
May 13th, 2008 at 9:41 am
I too am not happy with our countrys choices for president. I am very interested in learning more about Mr. Barr and his views. From what I know so far, it seems he is my last hope for a vote I can cast and feel good about. I know I am sick of working like a dog to support the lazy bon bon eating losers who keep having kids and collecting my money. This country keeps enabling these people! Get your dumb *** off the couch and get a job! And stop giving my money and our services to illegal aliens. I have paid into ss since my first job at 13, and the gov wants to give it to people who haven’t earned one cent of it! What will be left for me when I need it, NOTHING, THATS WHAT! For all those who work our asses off and struggle for the lost American Dream, and to feed and clothe our families, just getting by by the skin of our teeth, we need to stand and let our gov know this is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE! Speak your mind Mr. Barr and tell it like it is and how it should be!!!
May 13th, 2008 at 10:44 am
While I am not sure I will vote for Bob or not, I like the Fair tax concept and believe that a vastly limited government in most areas is a good thing. Good luck to you.
May 13th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
THANK YOU BOB FOR RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT, I WAS LOOKING FOR A CONCERN CONSERVATIVE VOICE THIS ELECTION, I HOPE YOU SHOCK THE WORLD WITH A WIN IN NOVEMBER, YOU HAVE MY VOTE.
GOD BLESS AMERICA
May 13th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
Thank you for getting into the race. We needed a real conservative running for president. I”ve been a Republican for 30 years but didn’t even vote for McCain during the primary. Ron Paul got my vote.
We need a president that will uphold the 2nd Amendment and our right to protect ourselves, family and home.
With liberals in charge of all media outlets it’ll be a tough campaign but hang in there.
You’ll get my vote. Good luck
May 13th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
I was a strong supporter of Ron Paul and I thought all was lost, when Ron Paul gave up the fight. Now, Thanks to Bob Barr, I have another Candidate who has taken up the Battle Cry for the oppressed by the ambushing of Washington by the Bush’s and Clinton’s! I want a free America and not a Communist/Nazi America, which our current government is forcing down our throats, in the guise of HOMELAND SECURITY! if Hillary steals the nomination for President from the majority of Democratic Americans supporting Obama, then maybe Barr can steal the nomination for President from McCain. I want an America based on our “CONSTITUTION”, and not an America based on WWII NAZI GERMANY! It is time to kick the “NAZIS” out of Washington! GO BOB!
May 13th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
I’m disgusted with my party, the Republican party, and I’m ready to switch to any conservative party besides DEMONcratic and RIP(OFF)ublican
May 13th, 2008 at 2:42 pm

Barr needs to generate some big publicity with his contributions. My thought is: pick a locale in the lower 48 and announce a big money drop. Tens of thousands of people would come to hear Barr speak, and then let the helicopters overhead release tens of thousands of dollars in cash. That ought to get the attention of every media outlet in the world. Better yer, have the helipcopters drop EUROs instead of dollars and have Barr make a speech about how the fed has ruined the dollar with inflation. Then everyone will get the point about why we truly need change!
May 13th, 2008 at 8:34 pm
When I saw the biased AP report that Bob Barr was running, I excitedly sent E-Mail to friends and family. Low and behold I got more responses and positive answers from them than I had seen in a long time. It’s On! Go Bob Go.
May 13th, 2008 at 11:26 pm
AT last! We have another choice! Go Bob Go!!
May 14th, 2008 at 10:20 am
I hope theat Bob proves to be someone I can vote for. I was following Wayne Roots capmpaign, but did not think he had the national recognition to win. As a conservative Christian I have found a home with the libertarians, because they believe in freedom and I agree, even if some of those freedom seem onerous and against my personal beliefs. We need our freedom back and in order to have mine I happy to give you yours. Freedom of religion has been crippled in this country as has many other freedoms, like freedon of thought and ideas. Smoke pot if you want just don’t drive please!.
May 14th, 2008 at 12:27 pm
A disenfranchised, disillusioned Democrat here — absolutely will not vote for Hillary or Barack. Please DO run. Neither of the other parties are entitled to have exclusive privilege to run for the White House. The Republicans telling you not to run are bloated and arrogant for asking, and pathetic for being so slavish to their party, health and welfare of our country be damned. We’ve got decades of history that speak to both parties’ worthlessness. Either a Paul/Barr ticket or Barr/Paul ticket works for me. Otherwise, I’m leaving top of my ballot blank in November.
May 14th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
Everyone tell all your friends and email the media about bob barr
May 14th, 2008 at 9:38 pm
While driving home today, I decided sadly that I would not vote in the upcoming presidential election. I have no candidate who stands for me as a conservative. Socialists like Obama and Clinton are out of the question, and after McCain’s global warming speech, I realized that the old liberal in Republican clothing had reappeared. Tonight, while watching Glenn Beck, I saw my old friend Bob Barr speaking eloquently and intelligently. I didn’t agree with everything he said, especially about torture and a border fence, but I am willing to meet him in the middle based on his other solid conservative principles. Protect the Second Amendment, Bob. I’m counting on you with my vote and support. Thanks for having the courage to challenge both machines. I’ll be checking your name in November.
May 15th, 2008 at 10:39 am
I am a former Marine and a long time Republican going all the way back to the Goldwater campaign (which I actively supported). Most recently I supported Dr. Ron Paul for President because I thought he was the only true Conservative running. After he dropped out of the race I tended to agree with Kinky Friedman (Texas) who when asked who he wanted to vote for replied “None of the above.”
We now have a Conservative candidate worth supporting - Bob Barr! So, lets get behind Bob and see if we can’t bring America back to former glory.
May 15th, 2008 at 11:33 am
Mr. Barr: I, like so many others, feel that the GOP and RNC have left the conservatives. To have McCain as the nominee (which the media annointed, not the voting public) is another testament that the power elites will do whatever they wish, even against the American population’s will. I am looking at your candidacy seriously, but have some important questions for you.
Why, upon your exist from Congress did you join with the ACLU? They are responsible for the errosion of our religious freedoms, as they have been very instrumental in lawsuit after lawsuit against religious displays for example. Any and every religious display is a freedom spelled out in the Constitution. Also, the ACLU supports rights and freedoms for illegal immigrants as though they were naturilized American citizens. On your issues page you say that the border must be secured, but you told Glen Beck that you are against a border fence. You also don’t spell out your position on what you would do with the illegals already here. You also told Glenn Beck that you don’t have much of a problem with the PATRIOT Act, but I read where you said you were sorry you voted for it. Where do you really stand on the citizens rights to privacy and personal freedoms? Will you strengthen our Military and all of our security programs?
These are just a few questions I have for you Mr. Barr. I really need another choice other than McCain, Clinton or Obama. Also, where do your positions differ from Dr. Chuck Baldwin (the Constitution Party candidate), who it seems will get many of the Ron Paul supporters? One thing is certain, with the both 3rd party candidates and whoever else will come up, McCain will get the wind knocked out of his hubristic sails!
May 15th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
I can’t wait to vote for Bob Barr and AGAINST each and every incumbent regardless of party affiliation. Let’s send the Washington elite establishment a strong message. Call radio shows and write letters to the editor. Let’s encourage everybody we know to vote for Bob Barr for President and against every incumbent regardless of party! Let’s turn Washington D.C. upside down! The New Revolution is Here. Total turnover in 2008.
May 26th, 2008 at 5:39 pm
Bob go for it I am behind you but please pray that you win because McCane still better than Obama ,I will pray for you to God will and can help us pull this off run like the wind fellow conservitive Don allen jones Cleveland Ga.
June 7th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
Last night (Friday June 6) it was my misfortune to tune in to one of those blabbermouth political talk shows on TV. The host openly admitted that he was not an intelligent man and did not graduate (I don’t know why) and his guess was Libertarian Party candidate Bob Barr.
For ten minutes, I was subject to a level of discourse that I hadn’t witnessed since my 7th grade metal shop class. After baiting Barr for several minutes on the subject of environmentalism, Barr finally bit the hook and stated on-the-record, and I quote…
“Global warming is a myth.”
—Bob Barr, June 6, 2008
The libertarian party has always been the political equivalent of the flat earth society. They’re objectives are always quite naive and, in the end, they basically come across as closet conservatives with a very greedy streak. I think the above statement by Bob Barr shows just how removed from reality they truly are. It also speaks to their chances of winning the presidential election. Which are nil.
